Indiana will be shorthanded at safety for its Saturday season opener in Bloomington.
True freshman Byron Baldwin is listed as “out” on the Big Ten availability report published before the game.
Baldwin is the only player with an “out” or “questionable” designation for the Hoosiers, but his absence is notable because of Indiana’s other circumstances on the backend of the defense.
Veteran Louis Moore is the probable starter at free safety for the IU, along with Amare Ferrell at strong safety and Devan Boykin at rover.
But Moore may only be eligible for two more games as he navigates a lawsuit against the NCAA to play this season. He is currently only cleared through the week two game against Kennesaw State.
Baldwin, a 4-star recruit from Maryland, is a player who could step into Moore’s role if he’s healthy and the staff deems him capable of taking on such a significant job as a first-year player.
Redshirt senior Bryson Bonds and redshirt freshman Jah Jah Boyd would appear to be the two primary backups at safety for this afternoon’s contest.
Indiana and Old Dominion kick off at 2:30 p.m. ET inside Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.
