No matter who IU had available on Sunday afternoon, No. 2 UCLA on the road was going to be a significant challenge.
But when Big Ten leading scorer Shay Ciezki injured her ankle in the first quarter, a tall task became a mountain.
Indiana lost 92-48 at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, dropping to 14-13 overall and 3-12 in the Big Ten.
With Ciezki on the bench, UCLA (25-1) poured it on in the second quarter, outscoring Indiana 30-10 to put the game out of reach.
IU shot just 31.3% from the field overall including 20% from three. They added 13 turnovers and scored just .74 points per possession. The Hoosiers only had three assists for the entire game.
The Hoosiers were led by freshman wing Maya Makalusky with 13 points. Lenee Beaumont added 11, and Nevaeh Caffey chipped in with 10.
Indiana was also without starting center Zania Socka-Nguemen, who transferred in from UCLA during the offseason. Her absence helped contributed to a 51-24 rebounding advantage for the Bruins, including 23 offensive rebounds. UCLA scored 28 second chance points.
The Hoosiers will now have a week off to get healthy and regroup. They return to action next Sunday when they host Oregon at 1 p.m. ET.
