While the majority of IU football’s high school recruiting class of 2026 is in place, the Hoosiers still don’t have a quarterback in the rising senior class.
But according to a report by Adam Gorney of Rivals, they’ll have a quarterback visitor this weekend.
Cash Herrera decommitted from Iowa this week, and Gorney says he already has a Bloomington visit scheduled.
Herrera is a 3-star and the No. 42 QB in the class according to the average of the national recruiting sites.
In addition to Iowa, he had offers from UCLA, Cal, Minnesota, Arizona, Virginia Tech and several Group of Five and Ivy League programs. When he committed to Iowa in October, the main competition was UCLA.
Listed at around 6-foot-3 and 207 pounds, Herrera attends Bishop’s H.S. in San Diego, Calif. As a junior, Herrera was 141-of-226 passing (62.4%) for 2,033 yards with 24 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also had 334 yards rushing and eight touchdowns on the ground.
As a sophomore, he completed 64.4% of his passes for 2,647 yards and 31 touchdowns.
Here’s how national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins of 247Sports described Herrera on his profile page there in the fall of 2024.
“Herrera is a late bloomer at the quarterback position who generated a lot of positive buzz this past off-season. He’s a player that the more we dug in to him, the more we liked. He was a standout at the SoCal Elite 11 Regional Camp back in March and showed he could hang with some of the top signal callers in the region. He has a smooth, easy delivery and the ball jumps out of his hand. He’s a traditional pocket passer but shows good mobility and can make plays off-script when a play breaks down. He has a good feel for the position in terms of throwing on time and with anticipation and can get the ball out quick and from different arm angles, not for show but for necessity. He’s a tough kid as well and will stand in and take a shot to get a throw off. He’s a player that is trending up for us and is projects as a high major Power 4 prospect.”
None of Indiana’s current quarterbacks will definitively be out of eligibility following the 2025 season. But if Fernando Mendoza’s season goes as expected, he’ll have good chance to be an early-round selection in next year’s NFL Draft.
And the position will be wide open behind him.
Grant Wilson likely could return with a waiver, and Alberto Mendoza, Tyler Cherry and Jacob Bell will all have multiple years remaining.
