IU women’s basketball all-time leading scorer Tyra Buss hired as assistant coach at Evansville

Evansville just landed IU’s all-time scoring ace.

The University of Evansville women’s basketball program announced on Tuesday that former IU star Tyra Buss will join the team as an assistant coach.

Hailing from Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Buss returns to the tri-state after an illustrious playing career at Indiana.

The four-year starter became the Hoosiers’ all-time leading scorer with 2,364 career points during her career from 2014 to 2018.  Buss led the Hoosiers to a 2018 WNIT title and was named the Postseason WNIT Most Valuable Player in the process.  She is also IU’s all-time leader in assists and steals.

Buss’ new home is just a short 40-mile drive southeast from Mt. Carmel.

A two-time Ms. Basketball honoree for the state of Illinois in high school, Buss starred for Mt. Carmel High School.

Buss helped lead Mt. Carmel to a 112-16 (.875) record, while being named Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year, a Parade High School All-American and the National High School Coaches Association Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year in 2014.

After her IU career, Buss spent a couple weeks with the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA before heading overseas for one season in Greece.  She has also conducted basketball camps and worked as an analysts on the Big Ten Network since graduating from Indiana.

Buss will look to help rebuild the Evansville program after it finished with a 3-26 record for the 2019-20 campaign.  The Aces have won just nine games over the last three years.
