FINAL: Northwestern 74, Indiana 61
IU has now lost seven straight games to Northwestern, dating back to the Archie Miller era.
SECOND HALF
Final media timeout: Northwestern 71, Indiana 55.
- Indiana is just checked out. The Hoosiers are getting outscored by 17 points in the second half. It’s just an embarrassing showing for Darian DeVries’ group tonight.
- In the second half, IU is getting out-rebounded 16-12. This team is shooting just 4 for 18 from the field since halftime, and 1 for 7 from 3-point range. Northwestern is at a more respectable 10 for 23 from the field and 3 for 8 from beyond the arc.
Indiana is down 64-49 at the under-8, its biggest deficit of the night.
- IU is just disconnected out there. On both ends of the floor. It’s a little embarrassing what the Hoosiers have done in the second half here, particularly in a must-win game with NCAA Tournament hopes hanging in the balance.
- Tayton Conerway, just before this timeout, had maybe the worst turnover of the night for Indiana out of its 11. He went full-on hero mode, drove into the lane, and attempted a very reckless kick-out pass while spinning mid-air.
IU calls timeout after Jayden Reid hit another open three, and Northwestern stretches its lead to 60-47 with 9:33 left.
- Effort has not been an issue under Darian DeVries very often this season. IU’s issues have been elsewhere, but they’ve rarely mailed it in. This second half feels very much like an effort problem. Indiana has looked disinterested tonight.
Indiana trails 53-44 at the under-12 timeout.
- The last stretch of game has been pretty pathetic for the Hoosiers. Just not putting good possessions together on either end of the floor. Darian DeVries needs to get his guys to lock in before it’s too late.
- Additionally, Lamar Wilkerson went back to the locker room for a bit with an injury. But he just returned to the Indiana bench, got his right ankle taped up, and is tying his shoes. Looks like he could come back into the game soon.
45-43 Northwestern at the under-16 timeout, 14:59 left.
-
Chris Collins flat-out outcoached Darian DeVries in Bloomington, and so far, that’s what’s happening again. Indiana has just looked a step behind Northwestern on both ends of the floor since the first half under-8. Simply put, IU has not looked like a team whose season is on the line tonight.
Indiana calls a timeout with 16:41 left in the second half — Reed Bailey called it while trapped against the baseline to save a possession. Northwestern leads, 45-41.
- Big Ten leading scorer Nick Martinelli has seven points already in the second half for the Wildcats. IU is just having more defensive issues.
Second half is underway.
HALFTIME: Indiana 37, Northwestern 36
- IU is a little fortunate to go into the locker room ahead after losing a Northwestern shooter at the buzzer.
- The Hoosiers were just not doing some little things well late in the half. Things like boxing out, closing out, playing under control, and keeping track of defensive assignments.
- Offensively, DeVries and Wilkerson got rolling at the beginning of the game and then cooled off. Indiana really needs them to find a rhythm again.
- Defensively, IU needs to lock in. Too many blown assignments.
FIRST HALF
At the final media timeout of the first half, with 3:56 on the clock, IU leads Northwestern 32-27.
- A bit of a slippage for IU there. A few turnovers and defensive lapses brought the Wildcats closer.
- Particularly on defense, IU needs to buckle up.
28-19 Hoosiers at the under-8 timeout, with 7:29 left until halftime.
- This feels pretty similar to the first matchup these teams played this season. Indiana is doing everything it needs to do to pull away with a nice lead here. The question will be, can it avoid what happened in the second half?
- Sam Alexis is up to six points. Tucker DeVries continues his nice half, as he’s up to five assists with no turnovers, along with his five points and two rebounds.
IU leads Northwestern 21-13 at the under-12, with 10:09 left in the first half.
- Indiana’s defense looks a little discombobulated out there at times. Leading to some issues. But IU is playing pretty well overall.
- Wilkerson is up to eight points so far. 3 for 5 shooting.
- IU is doing a good job against Nick Martinelli defensively, which could be the reason why things look a little off elsewhere. So much attention headed towards Martinelli.
13-9 Indiana at the first media timeout.
- Good start for Tucker DeVries and Lamar Wilkerson. DeVries has five points, Wilkerson at six. Wilkerson is now three 3-pointers away from tying Steve Alford’s single-season program record.
- Worth remembering, Indiana has played in this building already this season. The Hoosiers’ early-season rout over Marquette was also at United Center. DeVries had a monster game that day.
We are underway at the United Center. This is another must-win game for Indiana to keep NCAA Tournament hopes alive. And this one would almost certainly kill off the Hoosiers if they lost.
PREGAME NOTES
I am not anticipating a particularly lively atmosphere here at United Center. #iubb pic.twitter.com/UFxoC05kGu

As posted in the comments, Reed Bailey starts over Nick Dorn tonight. IU going with the two-big lineup out of the gate here. Interesting.

The in-arena clock makes it look like tipoff will be closer to 6:40 than 6:30.
Nothing surprising in the availability report for Indiana. Arrinten Page’s absence was reported last night, but is still notable for Northwestern. He posted 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists in the Wildcats’ win over IU at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall a few weeks ago.
