IU men’s basketball posts another perfect APR score

IU men’s basketball has had its academic house in order lately.

After tiptoeing the line of postseason ineligibility during the Kelvin Sampson and Tom Crean eras, the program has been rock solid of late.

The Hoosiers earned a perfect 1,000 APR score for the 2021-22 academic year, the most recent data released this week, and the program’s current four-year average is also now a perfect 1,000.

Indiana fans learned to fear the APR under previous head coaches.

A four-year average score of 930 typically makes a team ineligible for postseason competition, although penalties are currently suspended in connection with the pandemic.  After posting a score of 811 in 2007-08, Sampson’s final year, the Hoosiers posted four straight perfect scores of 1,000 from 2009-13 to avoid postseason ineligibility.

But then the IU men posted a 978 in 2013-14, a 943 in 2014-15, a 918 in 2015-16 and a 920 the year Crean was fired in 2016-17. Indiana’s four-year score fell into the danger zone at 943.

The IU basketball program has been at or near perfect since.

All 14 Big Ten men’s basketball programs are above 930.  Maryland is the lowest at 940, followed by Illinois (945) and Penn State (948).  Nebraska is the only other program with a perfect multi-year score.

According to the NCAA, the APR is calculated as follows: Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible. A team’s total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000.

Overall, eleven of IU’s 22 programs earned perfect 1,000 APR scores for 2021-22.

The eleven IU programs that earned a perfect APR score for the 2021-22 academic year are Men’s Basketball, Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Golf, Rowing, Men’s Soccer, Softball, Women’s Swimming and Diving, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Women’s Track and Field, and Volleyball.

As a department, IU’s combined single-year APR score was 984, and all of IU’s 22 programs easily met the required four-year average of 930 to be eligible for NCAA Championship competition during the 2023-24 season.
