Indiana moved to 6-0 with a 20-17 win over Nebraska Saturday afternoon in Lincoln.
The full offensive snap counts from the game are below.
But first, here are some position-by-position notes on the offense coming out of the contest:
Quarterback
PFF gave Hoover good to average grades across the board. He generally had time to throw and IU executed against crowd noise effectively. He was pressured seven times and sacked twice.
Hoover delivered two passing touchdowns in the final 12:01 of the game. He threw a laser on Nick Marsh’s 75-yard score, and patiently made the right read on Marsh’s 44-yarder.
He did miss some open receivers, including a streaking Nick Marsh who might have scored a 99-yard touchdown. It’s hard to know for sure how much the wind was a factor in the passing game, but it was certainly strong.
Excluding sacks, Hoover had 31 yards rushing and three carries and showed good judgment escaping the pocket. He added two first downs with his feet.
On the season Hoover has completed 68.2% of his throws for 1,364 yards, with 17 TDs and 0 INTs.
Running back
PFF gave similar marks to Lee Beebe, Jr. and Turbo Richard. The running game struggled to get going all day, and both players received similar grades. Their struggles seemed to be more about scheme, however, as Nebraska was heavily focused on stopping the run.
Richard forced two missed tackles, while Beebe, Jr. led the way with 26 yards after contact. Beebe also picked up a couple first downs on the ground.
PFF gave a very strong pass blocking grade to Beebe, Jr.
Wide Receiver
Marsh was the highest-graded offensive player on the team according to PFF. He secured the second-most receiving yards (187) in a game in his career, and scored multiple touchdowns for the second time. He had 108 yards after the catch.
Charlie Becker led the team with two contested catches.
PFF gave Tyler Morris the best run blocking grade among receivers.
IU has gotten through the first half of the regular season with no drops.
Tight End
Trevor Gibbs had his first career catch on a 13-yard grab in the third quarter. Now all three of IU’s young tight ends — Gibbs, Brock Schott and Andrew Barker — have one reception on the season.
With Barker out due to an injury, Gibbs led the way in tight end snaps once again. He received a good pass blocking grade and mediocre run blocking mark.
It appears Schott was limited to multiple tight end looks.
Offensive Line
Among the starters, left tackle Carter Smith had the highest pass and run blocking grades on the team according to PFF. Austin Leibfried, who subs in who IU goes with six offensive linemen, had the best run blocking grade of everyone — but he also had a false start penalty.
Smith and right tackle Adedamola Ajani allowed zero pressures according to PFF. Left guard Drew Evans was the only player to allow multiple pressures. Among the starters, Evans had the lowest run and pass blocking grades. He did leave the Rutgers game earlier than the other starters, for whatever that’s worth.
PFF didn’t tag anyone with responsibility for the two sacks of Hoover, which suggests the quarterback held the ball too long.
