IU football recruiting: 2021 running back Trenten Howland commits to Hoosiers

The backfield of the future is set in Bloomington.

Class of 2021 running back Trenten Howland announced on Friday that he has committed to play for IU.

Howland broke the news on his Twitter page.

    — Trent Howland (@HowlandTrenten) June 5, 2020

“Indiana overall was just a great fit for me in so many ways,” Howland told Rivals’ Tim Ohalloran.  “I just love Coach (Tom) Allen and his message and just the way he runs the football program. I just couldn’t pass up the offer from the Hoosiers.”

The Joliet, Illinois product is a 3-star recruit and the No. 804 player overall in the 2021 class according to the 247Sports Composite.

The 6-foot-2 and 225 pound Howland projects to be a bruising runner in the mold of Stevie Scott and Jordan Howard.  Along with fellow 2021 running back commit David Holloman, IU should now have both speed and power in their backfield for years to come.

The junior running back rushed for 1,401 yards on 178 carries and scored 14 touchdowns for Joliet West in 2019.

Howland also had 87 yards and two touchdowns receiving. He was named Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Class 8A All-State Honorable Mention.

Howland’s junior season included a 301 yard, 5 touchdown game against Plainfield Central in October.

247Sports’ Allen Trieu provides this analysis of Howland on his profile page at that recruiting site:

“Big, thickly built athlete. Explosive on the basketball court and translates that over to football where he is a bruising tailback, but can also break longer runs. Physical and is not afraid of contact. Could be a linebacker or running back recruit. At backer, he does not have experience, but has the measureables to play there. At running back, he has to show that he has the wiggle and elusiveness to play that position and be more than just a power back. Has the skill set of a Power 5 prospect, position just has to be determined.”

Howland chose Indiana offer a group of offering schools that included Nebraska, Purdue, Iowa State and Minnesota.

With Howland’s decision IU now has eight verbal commits in the incoming senior class.  To see more about Indiana’s recruiting class of 2021, go here.
