The situation looked pretty dire for a few days.
So much so that Indiana had to move freshman linebacker Henry Ohlinger to its running back room ahead of the Rutgers game after a wave of injuries struck the group.
Turbo Richard, Lee Beebe, Jr., Khobie Martin and Sean Cuono were all listed on Indiana’s availability report two weeks ago. And they are four of just five scholarship running backs on the team.
All but Martin ended up playing against Rutgers, and now the Hoosiers are trending back towards full strength.
Martin suffered multiple breaks in his right forearm in the first quarter of week one. After the injury head coach Curt Cignetti said Martin would return around midseason. We’re now halfway through the regular season, and the Indiana head coach says his third-year running back is nearing a return to action.
“He’s getting close to returning,” Cignetti said Monday on the Triple Option podcast.
A 6-foot and 210-pound product of Fishers, Indiana, Martin has been listed as out ahead of the first three Big Ten games this season. His status will be worth watching in the days to come.
Martin was injured while pass blocking on his second snap of the first game of the season.
He entered the season with high expectations after an impressive showing a year ago.
Martin was explosive out of the backfield as a redshirt freshman in 2025. He posted 78 carries for 505 yards and six touchdowns.
Indiana opened the 2026 campaign planning to rotate Martin, Richard and Beebe, Jr. We’ll see how quickly they can get back to that approach.
