Indiana’s season opening 52-16 win over North Texas revealed a lot about the depth chart.
After months of speculation, we now have a very good feel for who the ones and twos are for the 2026 Hoosiers.
The full snap counts are below. Here are some notes:
Quarterback
There were no surprises with Josh Hoover and Grant Wilson as the starter and backup, respectively.
Hoover had the best overall offensive PFF grade on the team in week one.
Running back
We were interested to see which running back would get the first series on Saturday, and it was Turbo Richard who got the call.
With Khobie Martin injured in the game and likely to miss time, it’s worth noting second-year Sean Cuono is likely the No. 3 back now. It remains to be seen whether IU will go with three backs in any games Martin misses. Cuono is likely to get plenty of work against Howard next week.
Martin was the No. 2 back but was injured on his second snap. He was pass blocking on the play and seems to have a shoulder issue.
With Martin out, Lee Beebe, Jr.’s role is likely to increase. He was IU’s highest-graded back on PFF in week one, slightly better than Richard.
Wide Receiver
No surprises at receiver, with Nick Marsh, Charlie Becker, and Tyler Morris getting the lion’s share of the work, and Shazz Preston, Davion Chandler, Lebron Bond and Jackson Wasserstrom all in the mix.
Becker had the best receiving grade among players with multiple targets.
As a unit IU had no drops.
Tight End
Brock Schott and Andrew Barker both saw snaps at tight end, and they were out there together at times in 12 personnel. Schott got the first series and played more snaps. He’s the starter at the moment. Barker played more in clear running situations.
Schott had a reception for 25 yards. PFF gave him very poor blocking grades. We’ll see if the staff agrees. Barker graded better than Schott in run blocking and didn’t have any pass blocking snaps.
Offensive Line
The two-deep on the offensive line was no surprise, but at some point the staff swapped Adedamola Ajani and Joe Brunner at the right guard and right tackle positions. Ajani had been playing inside at fall camp but played outside in week one. There are two true freshman along the backup offensive line — Ben Novak and Sam Simpson.
Austin Leibfried appears to be IU’s extra lineman when they go with a jumbo package.
The top PFF pass blocking grade went to Drew Evans, and the top run blocking grade went to Carter Smith.
