IU football notebook: Reps for Big Ten media day named, Ponds gets first round projection

A trio of seniors who followed IU football coach Curt Cignetti from James Madison to Indiana will represent the Hoosiers at the Big Ten’s media day July 22 in Las Vegas.

Wide receiver Elijah Sarratt, linebacker Aiden Fisher, and edge rusher Mikail Kamara are the three players who will join Cignetti at the annual event next month.

While these are three clear leaders of the team, don’t expect them to be named captains.  Cignetti said last year he doesn’t designate anyone a team captain.

“Never chosen captains, ever,” Cignetti said last summer. “I put guys out in front of flex and then when we are done they say something to the team before practice then we practice. That might be the same three guys, it might be seven guys on a rotation. That’s the way I’ve done it.”

PONDS GETS FIRST ROUND NFL DRAFT PROJECTION AT ESPN

ESPN’S Matt Miller posted an early projection of all 32 picks in next year’s NFL draft.

He has IU All-American cornerback D’Angelo Ponds going late in the first round with the 28th pick to Baltimore.

This is what Miller wrote about Ponds:

“Ponds projects as a slot corner because of his 5-foot-9, 170-pound frame, but he’s a feisty cover man with ball skills (five career interceptions) and the quickness to match up with inside receivers.”

    PHOTOS OF NEW TURF EMERGING

Indiana has installed a new turf field inside Memorial Stadium this summer.

Several photos of the new playing surface have been posted on social media by various accounts not affiliate with the school.  Here’s one of the best we’ve seen so far, posted by @RyanMcDivitt on X:

There’s nothing dramatically different here from the old turf, but the different shades of green every five yards and the red paint certainly have more pop.  The font in the end zones looks slightly different along with the shade of red, there appears to be an IU logo at the kickoff spot at the 35-yard lines, and the midfield logo might be slightly larger.

Indiana opens the 2025 season and debuts the new turf on Aug. 30 against Old Dominion.
