IU football: Defensive snap counts and notes from win over Rutgers

Indiana moved to 5-0 with a 47-15 win over Rutgers Saturday evening in Piscataway, New Jersey.

The full defensive snap counts from the game are below.

But first, here are some notes on the defense coming out of the contest.

For a look at the offense vs. Rutgers, GO HERE.

    Defensive Line

Mario Landino led the team with three QB pressures, and he had the top pass rush grade on the team according to PFF.

As a team IU had 14 pressures.

Stephen Daley and Tobi Osunsanmi have become an elite duo as bookends on the defensive line.  They combined for four pressures and three sacks.  Osunsanmi matched his career high with 2.0 tackles for loss, the third time this year he’s done that.

Kellan Wyatt had the top overall defensive grade among players with a meaningful number of snaps.  Coach Curt Cignetti said after the game Wyatt was rounding into form after recovering from a 2025 knee injury.

Joe Hjelle was tied for the best run defense grade at PFF.

First-year Blake Smythe had his first career sack.

    Linebackers

Isaiah Jones was targeted in the pass game three times but only allowed one reception.  He had six plays that PFF graded as “tackles that constitute a “failure” for the offense.”  His average depth of tackle was just 1.8 yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

Jacob Savage, Kaiden Turner and Jeff Utzinger all continue to see the field in various personnel groupings.

    Safeties

Preston Zachman had the top tackling grade on the team according to PFF.

Byron Baldwin registered a couple missed tackles.

IU coach Curt Cignetti said on Monday he likes how Quan Sanks plays.  The versatile DB played both rover and on the back end.  He tied Hjelle for the top run defense grade.

    Cornerbacks

Among defensive backs, the top PFF coverage grade went to veteran Jamari Sharpe.  He was often matched up with potential All-American K.J. Duff.

Not much changed this week, as second-year Jaylen Bell continues to start see a significant amount of snaps.  He’s up to 205 on the season, which is more than most would have guessed he’d see all year.

Cignetti said Monday A.J. Harris is “day-to-day” after suffering a week one injury.  It will be interesting to see how his return is handled.
