Offensive snap counts and notes from IU football’s win over Rutgers

Indiana moved to 5-0 with a 47-15 win over Rutgers Saturday evening in Piscataway.

The full offensive snap counts from the game are below.

But first, here are some notes on the offense coming out of the contest:

    Quarterback

Josh Hoover had another strong showing with his third four TD, zero INT game of the season.  On the season he has completed 71% of his throws for 1,102 yards with 15 TDs and 0 INTs.  He is one four quarterbacks nationally with 10-plus touchdown passes and zero interceptions.

Grant Wilson got another late game opportunity, and he continues to show he’d be a serviceable backup if duty calls.

    Running back

After a week of wondering about this group, it was back to the status quo with Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe, Jr. splitting carries.  They both went over 100 yards, and Richard had the top offensive grade on the team according to PFF.

Richard ran for a career-high 204 yards. His 200-yard game on fewer than 15 carries marks just the 28th time a Power 4 player rushed for 200-plus yards on 15-or-fewer rushing attempts.

The dynamic duo of Richard and Beebe, Jr. produced the first back-to-back 200-yard rushing efforts at Indiana since 2014. Tevin Coleman accomplished the feat at Rutgers (310) and at Ohio State (230) in consecutive weeks.

Richard led IU with seven missed tackles forced according to PFF, while Beebe, Jr. led with 76 yards after contact.

Both Richard and Beebe, Jr. were on the injury reports ahead of the game.  Coach Curt Cignetti said Beebe, Jr.’s injury popped up mid-week.

Freshman linebacker Henry Ohlinger worked with the running backs during pregame, so he appears to be the emergency option.

    Wide Receiver

Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh each went over 100 yards, and they were first down machines, with Becker producing six and Marsh five.  Marsh looked at times like a running back seeking to punish smaller defenders.  He had 61 yards after the catch.

Davion Chandler continues to pry away snaps from Tyler Morris.  They split slot duties once again.  Chandler had two contested catches on two such attempts.  He has scored a touchdown in four of the first five games.

As has been the case all season, IU had no drops.

    Tight End

Freshman Trevor Gibbs appears to have emerged as the No. 1 tight end.  He saw his highest snap count of the season and would have had a touchdown reception if Hoover made a better throw to him in the red zone.  Gibbs has consistently graded better as a pass blocker than run blocker at PFF.

Brock Schott had a bigger role this week than last, and after having the most snaps of the three last week, Andrew Barker had the least this week.  Clearly there’s still some evaluation ongoing.

Schott had the best run blocking grade on the team according to PFF.

    Offensive Line

As a team IU allowed five QB pressures and a sack.

Left tackle Carter Smith allowed three of the pressures including the sack, PFF says.  He only allowed nine pressures all of last season.  But PFF also says Smith had the best run blocking grade among the starting offensive linemen.

Joe Brunner had the best pass blocking grade on the team.

Drew Evans did leave the game earlier than the rest of the offensive line.  He has missed multiple games each of the last two seasons, so we’ll see if that was anything more than just an effort to keep his snap count lower whenever possible.
