There’s a familiar face to IU basketball coach Darian DeVries headed to the transfer portal.
San Jose State point guard Colby Garland will enter the portal when it opens on April 7 based on multiple reports.
The 6-foot and 190-pound Garland has one year of eligibility remaining.
Garland was Third Team All-Mountain West in 2025-26. He appeared in 29 games, starting in 27 of them. He averaged 20.3 points, 4.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game on the season, while shooting 49% from the field, including 37.2% from three. Garland also made 84.8% at the free throw line.
He finished second in the Mountain West in scoring and 27th in the nation, and also ranked third in the Mountain West in assists per game, fourth in field goal percentage, sixth in free throw percentage, third in assist-turnover ratio and second in minutes per game. San Jose State was 9-24 this season.
Garland transferred to San Jose State from Longwood, where he averaged 12.1 points and 4.4 assists in 29.3 minutes per game as a sophomore in 2024-25. He shot 46.7% from the field, including 33.8% from three . He made 85.2% at the stripe. Garland started 28 out of Longwood’s 32 games and helped them win 18 games.
Garland started his college career at Drake where he played for DeVries.
As a freshman in 2023-24, Garland played in 28 games with two starts for Drake, averaging nearly 20 minutes per game. He helped the team go 28-7 overall, on their way to winning the Missouri Valley Championship and earning a berth to the NCAA Tournament. Garland averaged 5.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
A product of Magnolia, Ark., Garland attended Link Academy after high school. During his post-grad season, he averaged 18.7 points, 4.6 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game.
He won back-to-back Arkansas state titles at Magnolia High School.
