IU basketball recruiting: Indiana offers 2023 5-star forward Kwame Evans, Jr.

Indiana offered one of the top players in the class of 2023 on Tuesday, and they have someone on-site at his school providing a recruiting assist.

Coach Mike Woodson has offered 6-foot-9 forward Kwame Evans, Jr. he announced on his Instagram page.  Evans recently transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida where he will team up with class of 2022 IU commit Jalen Hood-Schifino.

A 5-star prospect with a plus wingspan, Evans is the No. 2 ranked player in the class of 2023 according to the 247Sports Composite.

For AAU basketball Evans plays for Team Durant on the Nike EYBL circuit.

247Sports’ Eric Bossi recently described Evans this way after watching him at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam.

“His ability to move his feet, slide and contain guys in space is extremely impressive for a big kid, of any age,” Bossi wrote.  “On the offensive end, Evans is a legitimate threat from the three-point line, has soft touch off the glass and now that he’s starting to mature a little physically, he’s become pretty bouncy around the rim.”

Prior to his decision to transfer to Montverde, Evans attended Baltimore Polytechnic where he started and averaged 9.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.0 blocked shots per game as a freshman.  His sophomore season was completely cancelled due to the pandemic.

Evans’ dad, Kwame Evans Sr., led George Washington to three NCAA Tournament appearances between 1993 and 1996. He helped the Colonials reach the Sweet 16 in 1996 and ranks fifth on the GW all-time scoring list.

Indiana has been involved with Evans going back to 2020.  Assistant coach Kenya Hunter is leading the charge.  He has more than 20 offers including Auburn, Florida, Kansas, LSU, Maryland, Memphis, Texas and USC.
