IU basketball recruiting: Class of 2023 names to know — in-state forward Sam Orme

A few months of spring and summer basketball have brought out some new names on the IU class of 2023 radar.

6-foot-8 Carmel, Ind. forward Sam Orme is a player who has the Midwest high majors intrigued with his length and rapidly emerging skillset.

The Daily Hoosier first reported Indiana’s contact with Orme in mid-June soon after direct contact with the class of 2023 became permissible on June 15.

Carmel 6-8 2023 forward Sam Orme tells me he heard from Indiana yesterday #iubb

Orme was first or second off the bench for Carmel’s 2020-21 state championship squad, which speaks to the depth of that program more than anything.  He averaged 5.8 points and 1.8 rebounds for the Greyhounds.  But what has colleges taking a close look is Orme’s competency as a 3-point shooter.  He made 40-of-82 (49 percent) from behind the arc as a sophomore.  He couples his natural length with a high and fast release and accuracy to make him a great 3-point shooting prospect at the next level.

Orme will likely need to add more to his game to turn interest into offers, including the demonstration of more ability to attack off the dribble along with a bit more toughness, physicality and rebounding.  He will get a chance to show all of that and grow beyond his role as a shooting specialist as an upperclassman at Carmel.

Expect Indiana to be paying close attention to his development.

“They just want to keep following me closely this summer and eventually get me down on campus,” Orme told The Daily Hoosier of Indiana’s early message.

For AAU basketball Orme plays with the Grand Park Premier program on the UAA circuit.

Northwestern, Purdue, Iowa and Illinois are some of the other high majors who have been in contact thus far.
