THREE KEYS TO THE GAME
1. Sam Alexis posts big first half. Sam Alexis took advantage of his size, and had space to operate in the middle of the Minnesota zone. The Gophers didn’t double and he was able to win one-on-one matchups. He scored 17 first half points on 8 of 9 shooting to help IU get off to a strong start. Alexis finished with 23 points and nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end. He added two blocks in a dominant effort in just 27 minutes.
2. Improved perimeter defense. Indiana had been getting gashed from beyond the arc in recent games, but Minnesota made 5 of 21 from three (23.8%) as part of a 32.1% overall shooting effort. The Golden Gophers added 11 turnovers and scored just .77 points per possession. Minnesota only had six assists for the game, and they only attempted 12 free throws. The Hoosiers also took away the back cuts Minnesota was able to find in the first meeting in December.
3. Hoosiers solid on the glass. Minnesota missed a bunch of shots, but IU didn’t allow that to turn into second chances. The Hoosiers outrebounded the Gophers 37-24. Alexis and Tucker DeVries each had nine rebounds to lead the way. Minnesota had eight offensive rebounds on 36 misses from the field and scored just five second chance points.
