Indiana left too many runners on base in their pool play opener in the Big Ten Tournament at Charles Schwab Field Tuesday afternoon.
And a 5-2 loss to No. 10 seed Rutgers means the Hoosiers’ season will almost certainly be coming to an end in Omaha before the weekend.
IU didn’t score until a Devin Taylor two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth. They had 10 hits but left 11 runners on base.
The Hoosiers still play Iowa on Friday at 3 p.m. ET to complete the two-game pool play. But that will likely be their final game of the season. Only one team from each of four three-team pools advances to the weekend single elimination final four. With a loss, Indiana won’t be able to win tiebreakers against Rutgers or Iowa, meaning the Hoosiers cannot advance to the weekend. The highest seed wins the tiebreaker.
IU was No. 61 in the college baseball RPI heading into Tuesday. They do not appear to have a chance to receive an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. At No. 55, IU had the highest RPI of any at-large team in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers haven’t missed the NCAA Tournament since 2022.
Big Ten No. 6 seed Indiana is 31-24 going into Friday’s game.
