During the offseason we’ll keep you updated on a weekly basis on the news and notes that occur related to the Indiana University football program.  Here are the key notable events from the past week:

Ian Thomas Prepares for the Senior Bowl

The Senior Bowl is Saturday and Ian Thomas has been practicing all week.  Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst gave the following favorable reviews:

    • Tuesday: Top tight-end performance from the North on Day 1. Looked very sound fundamentally — he breaks down well, bends his knees and stays square as a blocker. Better-than-expected blocking strength. Had one bad drop but overall caught the ball very well.
    • Wednesday: Another good day for Thomas. Fluid and very smooth moving around the field. Did not make any flash plays but was steady in every area.

Updated Four Round Mock Draft by Draft Wire

Draft Wire published a mock draft on January 24th and had three Hoosiers going in the third round:

    • Tegray Scales – pick 66
    • Ian Thomas – pick 80
    • Simmie Cobbs – pick 86

We provided Mel Kiper’s first mock draft and an earlier version of the Draft Wire mock draft here.

    Quarterback Competition

The Indiana Daily Student gave an update on the January early enrollees and had this quote from freshman Michael Penix on the starting quarterback situation:

“The opportunity is great,” Penix said last week. “Coach Allen, he told me that it’s going to be a fair competition, so all the quarterbacks in the quarterback room are going to compete for the starting job.”

Indiana adds to 2018 Recruiting Class

Hoosier Huddle reported the addition of Jamar Johnson to IU’s 2018 class.  Johnson’s commitment bring’s Indiana’s 2018 class to 24 and is rated 43rd nationally. He had offers from several programs including Iowa State, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Washington State.

Covington and Scales Shine in Bowl Games

Chris Covington and Tegray Scales led their teams in tackles (Covington 9, Scales 7) in the NFLPA Bowl and Shrine Game, respectively.

Indiana and Indiana State Agree to Two-Year Series

The Hoosiers and Sycamore have agreed to play two games in Bloomington in 2025 and 2027.
