The transfer portal giveth and taketh, and this fall five players who have played quarterback for Indiana will be on  FBS rosters beyond Bloomington.

Here’s a quick look at them and their outlooks for the 2025 campaign.

Dexter Williams will be the starting quarterback for Kennesaw State in week two when they travel to Indiana to face the Hoosiers.  He won the job at the Owls’ fall camp.  Williams made five appearances in 2024 for Georgia Southern and finished the season 19-for-30 and 248 yards and three passing touchdowns.  He also finished with 45 rushing yards and a rushing TD.

Williams is back home in Georgia after starting his career at IU.  He did not see any 2023 game action after rehabbing an injury suffered in the 2022 season finale.  Williams appeared in four games with two starts in 2022.  He finished 13-of-48 with two touchdowns and 165 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.  He arrived at IU in 2020 but didn’t see any game action the first two years.

Brendan Sorsby is back as the starter for Cincinnati and he’ll get a primetime start to his redshirt junior season.  The Bearcats open 2025 next Thursday, Aug. 28 against Nebraska in the Battle Sports Kansas City Classic at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Sorsby finished strong for IU in 2023, and he’s coming off a solid 2024 campaign at Cincinnati.  He finished 249-of-389 for 2,813 yards and 18 touchdowns passing, in addition to 447 yards on the ground in 2024.  The Texas product was one of three quarterbacks nationally with 2,500 passing yards, 15 passing TDs and nine rushing TDs. He was also the only FBS quarterback with a 425+ yard passing performance and a 125+ yard rushing performance.

Tayven Jackson is going to begin the season as a backup at UCF and head coach Scott Frost after a competitive 3-way battle.  It’s the fourth season in a row Jackson has been unable to win the starting role outright at fall camp going back to his freshman year at Tennessee.

But Jackson played a key role in preserving what turned out to be a 10-0 start by Indiana in 2024.  He won his lone start a season ago — accounting for 141 yards of offense and two touchdowns against Washington last October. In 13 career appearances for the Hoosiers, Jackson threw for 1,263 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions, and he added four rushing scores.

Cam Fancher will be the starter for UCF Aug. 28 opener against Jacksonville State.

Broc Lowry is back at Western Michigan for his redshirt sophomore season.  He’s been in a fall camp battle for the starting job with JUCO transfer Brady Jones.  As the backup last season, Lowry finished with 133 yards rushing and 3 TDs, also going 4-8 on passing for 21 yards.

Lowry spent one season at Indiana as a true freshman in 2023.

Donaven McCulley began his career as a 4-star quarterback recruit at Indiana, and he played there as a true freshman in 2021 before converting to wide receiver.  McCulley transferred to Michigan during the offseason, and he’s going into the 2025 season, his final year of eligibility, with similar expectations to a year ago — he’s thought to be a featured receiver.

McCulley is wearing jersey No. 1 this year, a number typically reserved in that program for the team’s top receiver.  He appeared to be trending in that direction in 2023 for IU with 48 receptions for 644 yards and six touchdowns.

But McCulley couldn’t carve-out a big role under Curt Cignetti, and he transferred midseason in 2024 to preserve his redshirt year.  He has 66 catches for 834 yards and 8 TDs for his college career.
