It took a former Hoosier to end a long touchdown drought in Super Bowl LX.
Former IU tight end A.J. Barner was the first player to find the end zone in Santa Clara when he caught 16-yard score for Seattle in the fourth quarter.
Barner played at Indiana for three seasons (2020-22) and was a team captain his final season in Bloomington. He caught 44 passes for 385 yards and five touchdowns as a Hoosier.
For his part, former IU coach Tom Allen saw the potential in Barner to do great things.
“A.J. Barner has a chance to be the best tight end we’ve ever had at Indiana,” Allen said in May 2022 at an alumni event. “That’s my prediction.
“He’s a special, special player. He’s a big dude, and he can run, and he’s got a tremendous level of work ethic and toughness.”
After three seasons in Bloomington, Barner transferred to Michigan where he won a national title in 2023.
The Seahawks selected Barner with the No. 121 pick in the 2024 draft.
