Tino Sunseri will not be making a return trip to Bloomington in a few weeks.
Indiana’s quarterbacks coach last season and a multi-season assistant under Curt Cignetti, Sunseri left IU following the 2024 campaign to become the offensive coordinator at UCLA.
But Sunseri and UCLA have mutually agreed to part ways midseason according to multiple reports.
UCLA ranks just No. 119 in total offense and No. 134 in scoring offense through week five. The move comes as part of continuing upheaval in Los Angeles. The Bruins fired head coach DeShaun Foster a couple weeks ago.
Despite the hiccup at UCLA, Sunseri has had a long run of success with quarterbacks, including Kurtis Rourke at Indiana in 2024. He likely won’t be available long.
Sunseri came to Indiana from James Madison where he worked under Cignetti.
Under his direction, the 2023 season saw Jordan McCloud earn Sun Belt Player of the Year, in 2022, Todd Centeio was voted Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year, and in 2021, Cole Johnson set the JMU single-season records for passing yards (3,779), passing touchdowns (41), and completions (287).
Sunseri came to JMU after a two-and-a-half year stint on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama, where he served as a graduate assistant, working primarily with the quarterbacks.
UCLA tight ends coach Jerry Neuheisel will be the offensive playcaller when the Bruins (0-4 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) face IU on Oct. 25.
