Five quick reactions to IU basketball’s 2025-26 “initial” roster release

Indiana released what it is referring to as an initial release of the 2025-26 roster on Monday morning.

This announcement provided some insights after the program had gone radio silent on roster developments since the end of the 2024-25 season.

The Hoosiers formally announced 11 new players.  Here are five quick things we noticed:

    1. The word “initial” doing some work:  Indiana described its announcement as an “initial” release of the roster.  New head coach Darian DeVries said last week the coaching staff is still recruiting to fill at least two open spots on the roster.  What we’ve known for a while and was confirmed in the release is IU has 11 scholarship players currently with the team.  They’d likely be willing to go up to 13.  So don’t take this announcement of the roster as a suggestion that the team has been finalized, but rather just finally some formal clarity on who is actually on this basketball team.  Indiana can add players throughout the summer.

    2. Goode and Leal’s numbers assigned:  Another option on the table for “adding” players has been the return of Luke Goode and Anthony Leal via approved hardship waiver requests.  Both players are seeking a fifth season of college basketball.  As of last week, DeVries said those requests of the NCAA are still ongoing.  It was difficult to ignore, however, that both Goode’s No. 10 and Leal’s No. 3 have been assigned to other players — Josh Harris and Lamar Wilkerson, respectively.  Does the word “initial” apply to those number assignments too?  We shall see.

    3. Two returning walk-ons:  There will be at least two players who return from the Mike Woodson era.  Walk-ons Jordan Rayford and Ian Stephens were both included in the roster announcement.  For both players, this will be their third seasons with the program.  Neither player saw the floor much as Woodson almost never played walk-ons.  But Rayford and Stephens should bring some decent athleticism and length to practices relative to what programs typically can expect from walk-ons.

    4. A near-perfect sequence:  The NCAA recently allowed any uniform number 0-99.  That created a first time in decades scenario at IU when Kanaan Carlyle wore No. 9, and Bryson Tucker wore No. 8.  This 2025-26 Indiana team has a near-perfect sequential roster, with every jersey number 0-12 taken except for those Nos. 8 and 9.  Only the two walk-ons deviate from the 1-12 sequence at this point.  If there are additional roster additions, it sure seems like Nos. 8 and 9 will be tempting.

Here is the current roster by number:

    0 – Jasai Miles
    1 – Reed Bailey
    2 – Jason Drake
    3 – Lamar Wilkerson
    4 – Sam Alexis
    5 – Conor Enright
    6 – Tayton Conerway
    7 – Nick Dorn
    10 – Josh Harris
    11 – Trent Sisley
    12 – Tucker DeVries
    14 – Jordan Rayford
    30 – Ian Stephens

There was likely wrangling for some of those numbers.  Enright wore No. 4 at Drake and DePaul.  Nick Dorn wore 0 at Elon.  Tayton Conerway wore 12 at Troy and that was Trent Sisley’s high school number too.  All of them made changes.  Sisley, an IU fan growing up, steps right into the number of program legend Isiah Thomas.  Tucker DeVries stays with his preferred 12, the number of IU legend Steve Alford.

    5. Enright listed at 6-foot:  Did DePaul transfer guard Conor Enright shrink two inches?  Or did Indiana list him at his actual height?  Probably the latter.  Enright was listed at 6-foot-2 by DePaul a year ago, but IU has him at 6-foot on the initial release.  Enright started his career at Drake under DeVries, and he was listed as 6-foot by the Bulldogs.

The rest of the heights seem to be consistent with prior listings.  Sisley is initially listed in college at 6-foot-7 and 205 pounds.  Weights appeared to have carried over from prior rosters.  Indiana typically makes updates to measurements after the end of the summer training program.
