Curt Cignetti addresses Sonny Dykes’ comment on Josh Hoover: Run game and defense help

TCU head coach Sonny Dykes came across as bitter last week when discussing his now former quarterback Josh Hoover.

During an interview with State of the Frogs, Dykes made comments about Hoover that went viral on social media.

“I mean, I think you know that — look, numbers are numbers, and stats are stats. And I think you know, you look for us, and I think Josh started 31 games here as a quarterback, and we turned the ball over 40 — he turned the ball over 42 times in those 31 starts,” Dykes said.

Those turnover numbers are accurate, but they paint an incomplete picture of Hoover, who has arrived in Bloomington as college football’s active career leader passing yards with 9,629. He’s second in active passing touchdowns with 71 — the exact same career total of Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza.

Ever the tape junky and a well-known evaluator of quarterbacks, IU coach Curt Cignetti is of course well aware of Hoover’s strengths and weaknesses as a quarterback.

And as it turns out, Cignetti is also well aware of Dykes’ comments last week.

“Got to clean up some of the turnovers, which Coach Dykes made light of,” Cignetti said Thursday following practice.

Cignetti has a long history of elevating the performance of his transfer quarterbacks.  And he then went on to point out Hoover should be entering a more well-rounded program that will allow him to not have to carry such a heavy burden.

“When Josh got here, he met his two new best friends — great defense and a really good run game, and he was never the same after that,” Cignetti said with a wry smile.
