Selection Sunday is six weeks away, and with IU basketball firmly in the mix The Daily Hoosier will check in each Monday to see where they stand in the eyes of the bracketologists.

Our favorite resource for bracket predictions is bracketmatrix.com, an aggregation site that compiles dozens of prognostications and produces an average.

As it stands on Monday, Jan. 31 at Bracket Matrix, Indiana is solidly in the field as a No. 8 seed.  It should be noted that many of the brackets that feed into Bracket Matrix had not been updated on the Bracket Matrix site since IU’s convincing 68-55 win at Maryland.

The most favorable outlets have Indiana as No. 7 seed, while one still had them at No. 12.

Some of the best known bracketologists include ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, who has IU as No. 8 seed as of Friday.  CBS’s Jerry Palm updated his bracket on Monday and now has IU as a No. 9, up two seeds from his last publication.  The Athletic has IU as a No. 8, and Bart Torvik has the Hoosiers as a No. 7.

The 2021-22 men’s basketball season marks the fourth season of the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) rankings, which replaced the RPI prior to the 2018-19 season as the primary sorting tool for evaluating teams.  The NCAA Tournament Committee uses the NET to facilitate the selection of the field.  The Hoosiers are currently No. 29 in today’s NET rankings.  Last season’s No. 29 team Oklahoma State was a No. 4 seed.

Indiana (16-5, 7-4) has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2016.  In the latest polls they received votes and were effectively ranked No. 31 in both the AP and Coaches top-25 released Monday.

The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday against No. 18 Illinois.
