As the afternoon went on at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, the scene was familiar. Indiana had a double-digit lead in the first half against Michigan, but the Wolverines stormed back to enter halftime down by just two points. And that surge continued out of the locker room. In 7:30 of game time, spanning the end of the first half and the beginning of the second, Michigan went on a 29-7 run. The Wolverines quickly took the lead in the second half, and extended it to double-digits, themselves, less than six minutes into the half. Indiana fans stood for most of…

Ahead of Indiana’s game against Michigan on Sunday, The Daily Hoosier caught up with Wolverines beat writer Clayton Sayfie from TheWolverine.com to preview the matchup. Here’s what he had to say about UM and IU. 1. Michigan really let an opportunity slip on Thursday against Illinois. What do you think went wrong, and how big of a blow is that for the Wolverines? That’s as big of a blow and as consequential as a regular-season loss can be. Michigan had the game there for the taking, with a shot to win at the end of regulation, a 7-point lead in first overtime…

Indiana women’s basketball was flying high in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. But the top-seeded Hoosiers quickly crashed down in the second half in Minneapolis. The Buckeyes trailed by 20 at halftime, but made the biggest comeback in Big Ten Tournament history and won, 79-75, to advance to the championship game. Ohio State (25-6) will face the winner of the other semifinal between Maryland and Iowa on Sunday. “We knew that they were not going to go away in the second half after the…

While the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament makes its Target Center debut, Sara Scalia doesn’t need an introduction. Growing up in Stillwater, Minn. — around a 30-minute drive from Minneapolis — the IU guard became very familiar with the arena. Her family had Minnesota Lynx season tickets, courtside, for eight years, from her fifth grade year through 11th grade. Maya Moore was her favorite player when she played at UConn, and then she became Scalia’s hometown hero in Minnesota. Sitting that close, she interacted with Moore a few times. Scalia joined the Lynx for their on-court victory dance on several…

Coming off its second loss of the season, Indiana women’s basketball was far from its best in its Big Ten Tournament opener. No. 9 seed Michigan State, one of just two teams to defeat the top-seeded Hoosiers this season, made life very difficult for IU for much of the afternoon. But good teams find a way to win games like that, and Indiana is one of the best teams in the nation. And IU found a way, pulling out an 94-85 win. Indiana (27-2) struggled on both ends for much of the first half. The Hoosiers trailed by 10 points…

After Indiana defeated Purdue on Saturday, Mike Woodson gave his players a clear message in the locker room. He told them that, while they could celebrate the victory on the ride home, they had to refocus for Tuesday’s game against Iowa at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. He told the Hoosiers that they needed to validate Saturday’s performance in their final two games of the regular season. IU didn’t heed those words. The Hawkeyes came to Bloomington, punched the Hoosiers right away, and never looked back. Indiana, for most of the evening, had no footing in the game. Iowa handed IU…

After winning its first outright Big Ten title in program history, Indiana women’s basketball brought home a haul of individual honors on Tuesday. Senior forward Mackenzie Holmes was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and Teri Moren was named Big Ten Coach of the Year. This is the second time Moren’s earned that honor, after receiving it in 2015-16. Additionally, each of Indiana’s primary six rotation players earned All-Big Ten recognition. Holmes and Grace Berger were named first team All-Big Ten by both media and coaches, and Chloe Moore-McNeil picked up second team All-Big Ten honors from media.…

Indiana women’s basketball has gotten used to winning. It’s only natural, when you win as much as the Hoosiers have this season. Indiana, ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll and receiving its first-ever first-place votes in both polls last week, was 26-1 entering Sunday’s showdown at Iowa. The Hoosiers have been one of the best teams in the country this season, racking up nine wins over AP-ranked opponents, second-most in the nation. But even after already securing the outright Big Ten title, this game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena was IU’s toughest test to date. Four of…

Indiana women’s basketball was so close, but so far. The second-ranked Hoosiers, after trailing for most of Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, took an 85-83 lead over No. 6 Iowa with 1.5 seconds left on free throws by Mackenzie Holmes. But that was too much time for the Hawkeyes, and particularly, for Caitlin Clark. After a timeout that advanced the ball to mid-court, Monika Czinano set an off-ball screen for Clark, which tripped up Chloe Moore-McNeil on defense. And Clark caught the pass, turned towards the hoop, and drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer. That big moment snapped IU’s 14-game…
