Late in the first quarter of Saturday’s Old Oaken Bucket game at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana’s offense was rolling. On the Hoosiers’ first possession of the game, freshman running back Jaylin Lucas took a run 71 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. The momentum carried into IU’s second possession, with the team finding success on option plays and creative runs, converting multiple fourth downs and pushing deep into Purdue territory. Just when it seemed like nothing could go wrong for Indiana, things suddenly fell apart. As quarterback Dexter Williams II attempted to evade a sack, he planted…

Indiana’s path to a 39-31 double overtime victory over Michigan State Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan, was an unorthodox one, to say the least. The Hoosiers completed just two passes for 31 yards all game long – but managed to come out on top. In an era in which spread offenses and high-flying shootouts dominate college football, Indiana looked to yesteryear in its game plan against Michigan State, dominating on the ground  – while setting a season-high for scoring and showing resilience in the second half in the team’s first win since September. Indiana’s new approach…

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A season-long struggle for Indiana’s defense reached a new low Saturday afternoon at Ohio Stadium, as the Hoosiers fell 56-14 to the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes. The performance marked not only Indiana’s worst defensive showing of the season, but also its worst in nearly a decade. Ohio State’s 56 points and 662 yards from scrimmage are the most allowed by the team since a 56-17 loss to Michigan State on Oct. 18, 2014, in which the Hoosiers also allowed exactly 662 yards. Head coach Tom Allen was disappointed with the team’s defensive performance against a star-studded Ohio…

Entering Saturday’s matchup against No. 15 Penn State, Tom Allen was quiet about who would be starting at quarterback for his team. While he could have revealed more, he never would have been able to predict what unfolded at Memorial Stadium on a windy afternoon. After an undisclosed injury held Connor Bazelak out of the contest, it was time for Jack Tuttle – and later Brendan Sorsby and Dexter Williams II – to step in behind center to limited success in a 45-14 loss to the Nittany Lions. The Jack Tuttle-led offense moved the ball with some consistency early in…

Indiana football got off to a fast start in Saturday’s game at Rutgers. Freshman running back Jaylin Lucas returned the game’s opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, while quarterback Connor Bazelak completed his first 10 passes and ran for a 7-yard touchdown to put IU ahead 14-0. But after a red-hot first eight minutes, Indiana’s offense cratered back down to earth in spectacular fashion, surrendering the early two-touchdown lead in a 24-17 defeat to Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights’ first Big Ten home win in more than three seasons. Bazelak said that the pressure applied by Rutgers at the line…

After last week’s disappointing performance, it seemed as if there was nowhere to go but up for Indiana football’s offensive line. With Rod Carey taking over for the fired Darren Hiller ahead of Saturday’s contest against Maryland, it marked a new chapter for a unit that had struggled mightily through the first six games of the 2022 season. While the Hoosiers lost 38-33 to the Terrapins Saturday in Bloomington, it marked an improvement for the offensive line in an imperfect afternoon for the offense as a whole. Head coach Tom Allen was impressed by the improvements he saw from the…

Tight end Aaron Steinfeldt caught his first touchdown in an Indiana uniform Saturday against Michigan at Memorial Stadium, a 10-yard scamper down the right sideline to put Indiana ahead 13-10 in the second quarter. Until he didn’t. Well after Steinfeldt and his teammates celebrated the touchdown and marched off the field to make way for the extra point unit, a penalty flag was thrown. Offensive pass interference for a pick play. Six points wiped off the board. While the moment of joy was brief for Steinfeldt, the play showed the Bloomington native that he can be a playmaker and contributor…

During the offseason, Indiana football head coach Tom Allen said that he had conversations with offensive line coach Darren Hiller about what he wanted to see improved following an underwhelming season for the position in 2021. He felt like he had seen a response from Hiller and the group. Six games into the 2022 season, Allen’s tune has changed significantly. “Not the last three weeks. Not last week. Not this week,” Allen said when asked if he had seen a response from the offensive line following Indiana’s 31-10 loss to Michigan Saturday. “Very disappointed.” All year long, a lack of…
