As one of the state’s top high school players in the late 80’s, Calbert Cheaney just wanted a chance to play for the legend. “Everybody wanted to play for Coach (Bob) Knight and play for their state back when I was growing up,” Cheaney said in Nov. 2023 when Knight passed.  “To have an opportunity to play for the man and to be recruited by him, I think that’s unbelievable. During that time, it was all about playing for your home state and playing for your home school and having Coach Knight coach you.” Cheaney got that chance as part…

Anthony Leal has become “that guy” for Indiana. What guy? You know that guy.  Brad Davison at Wisconsin.  Aaron Craft at Ohio State.  Brian Cardinal at Purdue. Yeah.  That guy.  You love him on your team, hate him on the other team. During the IU pregame radio show ahead of their contest at Oregon last week, color commentator and former Hoosiers guard Errek Suhr made just that observation about Leal. “I’ve been saying for years, Indiana needs a guy the other teams absolutely hate,” Suhr said. In Leal, they’ve got that guy. With Indiana down 49-45 Saturday with less than…

And with just the Big Ten Tournament remaining ahead of Sunday’s Selection Show, it appears unlikely at this point the Hoosiers will miss the 2025 Big Dance. But that’s not entirely free from doubt. As of Monday morning, IU is in 98 of the 103 brackets at Bracket Matrix.  Their average seed there is 11.08, with a range of No. 10 to No. 12.  There are two brackets updated since Saturday’s Ohio State game that continue to leave the Hoosiers out. Looking at…

Did you notice that word IU wing Luke Goode included in his senior day video? “I just want everybody to know that I gave my all this year, as it could be my last year,” he said. Could be? This is Goode’s fourth year of college basketball, three with Illinois and this year with Indiana.  But he only played 10 games during Illinois’ 2022-23 season.  And it’s that season that creates the possibility of a fifth year of college basketball for the Fort Wayne, Ind. native. Players who suffer injuries that force them to miss a significant portion of a…

After a solid college career, Justice Ellison appeared to have a shot to get some consideration for a role at the professional level. He rushed for 848 yards (5.3 ypc) and 10 scores in his lone season as Hoosier.  All together over five seasons, he gained over 3,000 yards from scrimmage and amassed 26 total touchdowns.  And with all of that production, an NFL training camp invite didn’t seem out of the question. But at some point since Indiana’s final game at Notre Dame in mid-December, Ellison decided he’d had enough on the gridiron. So Ellison picked up the phone…

IU football coach Curt Cignetti is always on the hunt for complacency in his program. And coming off a record setting season, he knows better than anyone there is a risk his players won’t enter 2025 spring practice with the same focus and determination they had a year ago. Last year Indiana was coming off a 9-27 record over the three prior seasons.  With a new coach and overhauled roster, everyone top to bottom was focused on quieting the doubters and making a statement:  This is the new Indiana. The way Cignetti operates, every year is the new Indiana.  Every…
