Indiana has outscored its opponents by a healthy margin in the middle of games this season. In total, the Hoosiers own a 184-93 advantage on the season in the second and third quarters, combined.  That’s a plenty-dominant 23.0-11.7 average per game over the middle two quarters.  Teams can win a lot of football games with a stretch of two quarters like that. What seemed highly unlikely a month ago happened on Tuesday evening in Bloomington, as IU routed Northwestern 6-1 and claimed at least a share of the 2024 Big Ten regular season title. The opportunity to clinch Tuesday arose after Ohio State tied Michigan State earlier in the evening.  The Buckeyes were a point behind Indiana in the league standings with two matches to play coming into the evening.  If OSU loses or ties in their conference finale against third-place Maryland, IU will claim the outright crown. Three-point shooting has been a popular topic throughout Mike Woodson’s tenure as head coach at Indiana. And it generally hasn’t been a pleasant conversation. With his first-career multi-interception game, sophomore defensive back D’Angelo Ponds earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week from the conference office on Monday. Ponds grabbed a pair of first half interceptions against Washington, with his first Hoosier interception going 67 yards the other way for the game’s opening touchdown. It was his first career pick-6 – college or high school – and is the longest defensive touchdown scored by an IU player since Jameel Cook Jr. took one for 96 yards against FIU in 2015. The updates continue to be positive as Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke continues to trend towards a return at Michigan State this weekend. IU’s starting quarterback had thumb surgery last week after suffering an injury in the first half of a 56-7 win over Nebraska.
