Two of the greatest players in the history of the Indiana University women’s basketball program apparently don’t want their college playing careers to come to an end. Sparked by a dominant effort from seniors Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill on Sunday afternoon, the Hoosiers knocked out UC Davis 81-66 and advanced to the Women’s NIT Final Four. The Indiana University men’s swimming and diving program finished in 3rd place overall at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, good for their best finish in 43 years. On the individual level, Ian Finnerty won national titles in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and Michael Hixon won the national title in the 1-meter dive competition. We couldn’t help but notice something strange when the Women’s NCAA Tournament Committee released its “last 8 under consideration” a couple weeks ago. Despite sweeping the home and home series with Purdue, and having a higher RPI and strength of schedule than the Boilers, Indiana was left out of the “last 8” while Purdue was included. For two teams that clearly had similar NCAA tournament profiles, the season sweep should have been enough to put the Hoosiers ahead of Purdue. The Indiana Hoosiers (19-14) host the Purdue Boilermaker (20-13) on Thursday night in the Sweet 16 round of the Women’s NIT. The Indiana University women’s basketball team won their 2nd round NIT contest against Milwaukee by a score of 74-54 and will now face arch-rival Purdue for the third time this season in the Sweet 16 round. The Hoosiers used an explosive 2nd quarter that included a 17-0 run to run out to a 42-24 halftime lead. The game was never really in doubt after that.
