Friday was certainly an interesting day for both the Indiana and Minnesota men’s basketball programs.  It isn’t often that you see both teams lose their starting center the day before they are about to play each other.  Moreover, while the programs came into the season with different expectations, both are suffering from perceived inconsistent play and at times not living up to what their coaches, players and fans had hoped for. Aside from from the much more important reasons for the suspension itself, the loss of Lynch is no small loss for the Gophers from a basketball perspective.  The Minnesota…

On Friday, Indiana University men’s basketball head coach Archie Miller shared the unfortunate news that sophomore big man De’Ron Davis will miss time with an undisclosed lower leg injury.  No timeline for his return was provided. We’ve seen this story before with Indiana basketball, and it wasn’t all that long ago.  Recent enough, in fact, that one of the same players who had to play center then will likely have to at least share that duty once again.  Back in the 2014-15 season Hoosier sophomore guard/forward Collin Hartman was asked to fill in for injured IU big man Hanner Mosquera-Perea. …

Throughout the now 15 game 2017-18 Indiana basketball season we’ve heard various perspectives from head coach Archie Miller on the team’s apparent inability to piece together complete games: “We were, to be honest with you, soft on the glass,” Indiana coach Archie Miller said. “In the second half, the game really changed on second shots.” (Wisconsin game) “Give Louisville credit, they did some good things in the second half,” Indiana first-year coach Archie Miller said. “We had some turnovers the last six minutes that really hurt us.” “Really disappointing game for our team,” Miller said. “Give Fort Wayne a lot…

Indiana senior guard Tyra Buss became the all-time leading scorer in Indiana University women’s basketball history on Wednesday night.  She broke the 34-year-old scoring record with her 14th point which came early in the second half.  The previous record of 1,817 points was held by Denise Jackson, which was set in the 1983-84 season. Unfortunately for Buss and the Hoosiers, IU came up short at Penn State, 77-74. After falling behind early, the Hoosiers outscored the Lady Lions 24-17 in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t quite enough.  Buss led IU with 27 points and Amanda Cahill added a season-high…

The consensus criticism of the 2017-18 Indiana men’s basketball team seems to be centered on a lack of passion, energy, discipline, and vocal floor leadership from the players.  The vulnerability of this team due to those issues really seemed to crystallize on Tuesday at Wisconsin as the Hoosiers were outworked and less fundamental than a group of mostly unheralded and inexperienced Badgers. Archie Miller hasn’t hidden his frustrations either, referring to the team at various times as “soft”, “lacking energy”, and “not fully understanding what it means to wear Indiana across their chests”. Most observers seemed to agree that based…

Make that 16 in a row at the Kohl Center, where Indiana has not won a game since 1998.  This was clearly not your typical Wisconsin team.  Beyond All-American Ethan Happ, the Badgers put a lineup of unknown and unrated players on the floor.  Indiana appeared to be the more talented team athletically and on paper.  But raw talent doesn’t always win games at this level, not even against depleted teams like Wisconsin.  Final score:  Wisconsin 71, Indiana 61. Overall:  D  A couple weeks ago we said that this team needed to develop an identity.  Well, it turns out they do…
