The legend of Anthony Thompson was growing in Indiana before he ever stepped foot in Bloomington.  Stories were circulating of a running back out of Terre Haute that would go entire games without ever hitting the ground.  Legends are just that, but by the time he arrived at IU in 1986, the expectations were sky high for Thompson. Let’s just say this — Anthony Thompson didn’t disappoint anyone. Thirty years after his IU playing days were over, virtually every Hoosier fan knows who you are talking about merely by saying his initials — “A.T.” Thompson had an immediate impact during…

We saved the best for last with our 2018 positional previews.  Indiana has built something of a reputation in recent years for producing high caliber offensive linemen, with Dan Feeney and Jason Spriggs at the top of the list. The Hoosiers were relatively young up front in 2017 and struggled at times to establish the run behind a line that was hit hard with injuries.  The silver lining was that not just starters but multiple tiers on the depth chart got experience — and they are all back. Now the Hoosiers are fully healthy and returning 12 guys, most of…

Newly named starting quarterback Peyton Ramsey is going to have a solid core of experienced receivers to choose from when the Hoosiers take the field at Florida International on Saturday. While IU isn’t particularly deep at the position, if the Hoosiers can stay healthy here this should be a position of strength throughout the season.  Today we take a closer look at the wide receivers with the opening kickoff now only two days away. WHO IS GONE The big loss from 2017 is all-Big Ten performer Simmie Cobbs, Jr.  Now on the Redskins preseason roster, Cobbs led the team with…

It is the final week of the NFL preseason, and the last chance for several former Indiana University football stars to make their case for landing on an NFL opening day roster.  We go through player by player below for each former IU player that was not a certainty to make the cut. The official cut-down day is coming up on Saturday Sep. 1 at 4.00 p.m. IAN THOMAS, CAROLINA TE Thomas played in 48 percent of the teams snaps in preseason thus far and seems like a lock to make the opening day roster as the backup to starting…

The next two players on this list are going to take you back to an era of Indiana football that is truly amazing.  If you didn’t know that IU once had an undefeated season under the direction of one of the more legendary names in the game at the time — now is the time to learn about it. Continuing with our theme of players on this list being true “outliers”, the player coming in at No. 3 may just have the most noteworthy distinction of anyone that donned the cream and crimson — the NFL Hall of Fame.  But…

With a big void left by an NFL bound former Hoosier, the tight end position was perhaps the most wide open position on the team going into fall camp. With the presumed incumbent out with an undisclosed injury, the competition appears to be rolling on into the season. Youth and inexperience rule the day in this group.  Of the six tight ends on the Hoosier roster, only one has ever caught a pass at the college level.  That is about to change. WHO IS GONE No unit on this football team has bigger shoes to fill than the tight end…

As a four year starter at quarterback, Antwaan Randle El might have been able to make this list based on his accomplishments passing the ball alone. The Illinois native is the program’s 2nd all-time leading passer with 7,469 yards, and his 42 career passing touchdowns land him at 4th all-time. But it’s only when you add in what Randle El did with his legs that you fully appreciate his greatness as a Hoosier.  He’s also the program’s 2nd all-time leading rusher with 3,895 yards.  Randle El actually led the team in rushing in 1998 and 2000, and that 2000 rushing…
