Indiana has been spending a lot of time, virtually anyway, in the backyard of the University of Virginia. The Hoosiers offered a scholarship to class of 2022 Charlottesville wing Justin Taylor a few weeks ago, and they are taking a close look at his high school teammate too. St. Anne’s Belfield School sophomore forward Carter Lang had an impressive freshman season that caught IU’s attention. Lang’s school first reported Indiana’s interest back in July. Few players in the IU basketball lore sit on a loftier perch than Calbert Cheaney. Cheaney’s 2,613 career points from 1989-93 still stand as the most in IU and Big Ten history. The three-time All-American led the Hoosiers to 105 wins during his four seasons on campus, including four NCAA Tournament appearances, two Big Ten titles and a run to the 1992 Final Four. Aaron Steinfeldt is a 6-foot-5 and 245 pound tight end from Bloomington North High School.  The class of 2021 tight end committed to IU in April. The No. 37 ranked tight end according to the 247Sports Composite, Steinfeldt has helped lead the Cougars to a 3-2 mark on the 2020 season. For two years in a row, a ligament injury derailed a debut season for Romeo Langford. In his lone season at IU, a torn thumb ligament on his shooting hand hindered Langford for months. Now as a rookie for the Boston Celtics, another torn ligament ended his season. “Romeo Langford this morning underwent successful surgery to repair the scapholunate ligament in his right wrist, the Celtics said in a release. “He will miss the remainder of the 2019-20 NBA season. With Raheem Mostert hobbled, a big opportunity opened up for Tevin Coleman. It didn’t last long. The former IU star suffered a knee injury on Sunday in New York soon after Mostert, and now Coleman will be on the shelf for a while. According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the 49ers running back will miss multiple weeks with a knee injury. “49ers’ RB Tevin Coleman is expected to miss “multiple weeks” with the knee injury he suffered Sunday,” a source told Schefter. September 22, 1945 — Ann Arbor, Michigan The challenge to open the 1945 season could not have been much greater. Indiana knew it had something special going into the season, but an immediate tall task stood in their way.  The Michigan Wolverines — on the road. The Hoosiers traveled to Ann Arbor knowing they could slay Michigan.  They did it a year earlier by a convincing 20-0 margin.  That was only the third win by IU over Michigan since 1900, and the first Wolverine Big Ten loss since 1942. Tragedy has struck former IU basketball great and Indiana high school hoops legend Damon Bailey. According to a release by the Brown County (Ind.) Sheriff’s Office, Bailey’s parents — Wendell and Beverly Bailey, were involved in a motorcycle accident on Monday afternoon. Wendell Bailey was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Beverly Bailey was flown to a nearby hospital due to the extent of her injuries. Playing under the tutelage of Deion Sanders, IU class of 2021 wide receiver commit Jordyn Williams is putting together an impressive senior season.  Williams transferred from his Georgia home to play his final season in Texas for the NFL legend. A three-star recruit out of Trinity Christian High School in Cedar Hill, Texas, Williams is putting up big numbers.
