If you take a quick look at Indiana’s projected 2022-23 roster based on scholarship numbers, you might conclude that the Hoosiers don’t have room for additions from the high school ranks in the class of 2022. It is true that IU presently has all of the 13 available scholarships accounted for looking forward to 2022-23, plus an additional player in verbal commit C.J. Gunn.  But this is the era of roster turnover, and without speculating on names, it seems sensible to project that all 14 won’t be around in a year. The Indiana basketball coaching staff is certainly operating as…

Jalen Washington’s story to this point in his basketball career is as much about perseverance as anything else. The Gary, Ind. product lost a significant portion of his freshman season of high school basketball with an injury, and all of his sophomore season with a torn ACL.  The latter injury also cost him an entire spring and summer of AAU basketball in 2020, although with the pandemic in full effect then, what he lost did not resemble the typical high level shoe circuit competition. Only now is Washington’s class of 2022 Nike EYBL Meanstreets team seeing some of the best…

Mike Woodson is in for a rude awakening as the Indiana men’s basketball coach.  The NBA to college path doesn’t work.  A 63 year old with no college coaching experience can’t recruit. That’s what they all said anyway. One national commentator after another seemed all too eager to line up and take their shots after Indiana announced it had hired Woodson in late March. They may all prove to be right.  But four weeks in, it doesn’t look that way.  Not at all. USA Today’s Dan Wolken had to be shocked by the procession of New York Knicks players who…

Even an emerging program with by most accounts a great culture isn’t immune to the new era of roster turnover in college sports. Spring practice can bring clarity to the depth chart, and that may in part help explain a recent wave of IU football entries into the NCAA’s transfer portal over the last week. The latest to enter the portal is Miami, Fla. based wide receiver Gary Cooper.  He follows a pair of defensive linemen, Jeramy Passmore and Damarjhe Lewis, who signaled their intent to find a new school earlier this week.  Like Passmore and Lewis, Cooper is no…
