October 5, 2013 — Bloomington, Ind. IU was 0-for-the-series against Penn State.  0-16. But under head coach Kevin Wilson, by 2013 the Hoosiers were turning a corner. And in a Big Ten opener on Oct. 5, 2013, the Hoosiers kicked down a barrier with a convincing 44-24 win over the Nittany Lions. The linebacker position has always been a featured part of Indiana’s defense since Tom Allen arrived in 2016. During his first two years in Bloomington, Allen had two of his best at the position, with Tegray Scales and Chris Covington solidifying the defense. Four freshmen linebackers came in the door in 2018 as Scales and Covington exited.  Now those four are third year veterans, and once again IU hopes to have the linebacker position become a centerpiece of the defense. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack provided an update with fall camp now well underway. Wommack begins his second season in charge of the defense after taking over for head coach Tom Allen. IU finished 36th nationally in 2019 in total defense, including 43rd in rushing defense, 46th in passing defense, and 45th in scoring defense. It was the game Nebraska’s administration wanted. And they got it. Playing against 90,000 hostile fans and Nebraska in their famous “black shirt” uniforms, Indiana put together the signature win of its memorable 2019 season in Lincoln. IU clinched bowl eligibility behind a career best effort from Peyton Ramsey.  The Hoosier quarterback threw for 351 yards and rushed for another 42 while accounting for a total of three touchdowns. Indiana knew they were getting a bright kid. Bryson Bonds arrived in Bloomington after being named first team academic all-state in Texas as a high school senior, and he was a parliamentarian officer of the National Honor Society. Of course the Crowley, Texas product can play football too. Bonds was ranked the No. 51 safety in the 2020 class according to ESPN.  He closed out his career with 300 tackles, including 15 for a loss, six interceptions, 30 pass breakups, eight fumble recoveries, six touchdowns and two blocked field goals. It is no secret that Indiana would like to add at least one guard to their 2021 class. The Hoosiers have several top forward prospects still on the 2021 board, but it is less clear who they are tracking in the backcourt. One name that has emerged recently is senior combo guard Shane Dezonie. The Indiana football program released a video of starting quarterback Michael Penix mic’d up at fall camp this week. A redshirt sophomore, Penix is fully recovered from a November sternoclavicular joint surgery. Former Indiana forward De’Ron Davis will start his professional career overseas. The Colorado native will play for the Killester Dublin Basketball Club in Ireland according to his agent. “De’Ron Davis out of Indiana University has signed his rookie deal to play in Ireland,” Strategic Athlete Initiatives, Davis’ agent wrote in a Twitter post.  “Davis will be joining Killester Dublin Basketball Club in the Superleague to be the leading force for their team in pursuit of a Championship!” Terms of Davis’ deal were not disclosed. The injury bug didn’t wait for the season to begin for IU. Senior safety Raheem Layne will miss a meaningful portion of the 2020 season according to defensive coordinator Kane Wommack. Wommack indicated in a video conference with the media on Friday that Layne had a procedure but did not elaborate on the nature of the injury.  He suggested that Layne could return in the middle of the season. The state of Kentucky doesn’t regularly produce high end basketball talent, but it has a major star in the class of 2023. Louisville based small forward Kaleb Glenn is emerging as one of the top prospects in the sophomore class. Glenn averaged 13.4 points and 10.1 rebounds as a high school freshman.  He led the state in field goal percentage and was named first team all-seventh region.
