March 29, 1976, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania There were plenty of challenges and close calls along the way to Indiana’s perfect 32-0 1976 season. But the Hoosiers were never tested more than they were two minutes into the 1976 national championship game. The 1974-75 IU team was widely viewed as a more complete squad than the 1975-76 group with senior leaders Steve Green and John Laskowski.  But a late season injury to star forward Scott May ultimately contributed greatly to the Hoosiers (31-1) coming up short in the NCAA Tournament that year. A year later Indiana’s starting guard and best defender Bobby…

March 28, 1987 — New Orleans, Louisiana The largest crowd ever for a college basketball game saw a classic.  And they also saw something that many did not expect. While most anticipated a contrast in styles between run-and-gun UNLV and methodical Indiana, the Hoosiers opted to join the Runnin’ Rebels in a track meet. To the thrill and surprise of the 65,959 fans at the Louisiana Superdome, IU tried to beat No. 1 ranked UNLV in a national semifinal matchup at their own game.  According to Indiana head coach Bob Knight, it was the only chance the Hoosiers had against…

Former IU star Victor Oladipo sat down with former Michigan sharpshooter Duncan Robinson and Davis Reid on the Long Shot podcast. Oladipo goes in depth on his development as a young player, his college and NBA career, and battling back from injuries. Oladipo came to Indiana in 2010 without much fanfare. The theme of veteran leaders in the defensive backfield carries over from the cornerbacks to the safety and husky positions in 2022. A pair of fifth-year safeties likely sit atop the depth chart in Bryant Fitzgerald and Devon Matthews.  Fitzgerald spent much of the 2021 season at the hybrid safety-linebacker husky position, but he is back working as a free safety this spring. Noah Pierre, another fifth year player who has manned every position in the defensive backfield including most recently cornerback in 2021, is back at the husky spot. Behind the veterans are largely unproven but promising younger players…

When he was hired last March, Mike Woodson was asked about the importance of having former IU basketball players involved in the program. As someone who was hired because of his own status as a former player, it wasn’t surprising to learn Woodson placed a great deal of value on the concept of unification. “I will bring them all back and bridge this gap that’s so desperately needed,” Woodson said a year ago. “I’m going to try to tie it all together to make it all work, and we will all be one big family and win basketball games.” Woodson…

Whether it was offensive rebounds or turnovers, Indiana gave it away to UConn far too many times on Saturday afternoon in Bridgeport, Conn. And a 16-0 UConn start to the second half created a hill too tall to climb in the Round of 16 matchup. “You just can’t allow that to happen against a team like UConn,” IU head coach Teri Moren said after the game of UConn’s run coming out of halftime.  “It’s very difficult to overcome a start (to the second half) like that.  We just did some uncharacteristic things.  We knew it, we were very disappointed with…

Indiana picked up a commitment from class of 2023 in-state tight end Sam West on Saturday afternoon. West plays quarterback for Greensburg High School but was being recruited at the Power Five level to play tight end. “I wouldn’t be in this position if it weren’t for the blessings God has granted me with including my ability, family, coaches, teammates, and all who have made a positive influence on me,” West said in his announcement. “Big thank you to all schools who reached out during the process and gave me an opportunity.  Thank you to Coach (Kevin) Wright and Coach…
