ESPN staff writer Bill Connelly’s SP+ rankings model is a data driven system using logical inputs — and thus unbiased.  That’s why we like it and check in each year to see what his projections say about the state of IU football. Trayce Jackson-Davis’ freshman season came to an abrupt end due to the onset of the pandemic. His sophomore season was played without fans, and ended in the firing of his head coach. Year three was played under a new head coach, in a new system, with a wave of new teammates. Finally, everything looks just right for Indiana to have a strong season consistent with the blue blood expectations of the fan base, and Jackson-Davis seems hell bent on making sure no one derails it. As a junior he led the team in scoring (18.3), rebounding (8.1), field goal percentage (58.9%), free throws made (147), free throws attempted (218) and blocked shots (81), was second on the team with 66 assists, and he added 22 steals. Class of 2023 wing Jamie Kaiser is one of the fastest-risings prospects in the class of 2023. If he had walked away after three seasons, Trayce Jackson-Davis would have left with his name etched throughout the IU basketball record books. The 6-foot-9 All-Big Ten performer is already just  the second player in IU history with 1,500 points, 750 rebounds and 150 blocks, joining Alan Henderson with that prestigious distinction. Indiana didn’t help itself in Iowa this week, but the Hoosiers still managed to claim the eighth seed in the 2022 Big Ten baseball tournament. The conference office announced on Saturday evening the bracket for the 2022 tournament, held May 25-29 at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Neb.  It will be the league’s first tournament since 2019. The eight-team, double-elimination event begins Wednesday, May 25, with first-round games and continues through Sunday’s championship game on May 29. Indiana fans have a tendency to gravitate to the extremes, and Friday was no different when a euphoria swept through Hoosier Nation after the news broke Trayce Jackson-Davis would be returning for his senior season. The return of Indiana’s leading scorer and rebounder gives Indiana its deepest roster in a very long time.  The 2012-13 and 2015-16 Hoosiers may have been more talented at the top, but both squads lacked the kind of depth the 2022-23 edition of IU basketball appears to have.
