Indiana is playing in starting center Zach Carpenter’s hometown this weekend, but it isn’t clear whether the 6-foot-5, 305-pound redshirt junior will be suiting up. The Cincinnati Moeller H.S. product was injured during pre-game warmups on Saturday as IU prepared to play Western Kentucky.  Head coach Tom Allen didn’t explain exactly what happened to Carpenter, but he was certainly caught off guard when the improbable turn of events unfolded. “Very freaky, I guess, would be safe to say, freak accident,” Allen said on Monday.  “That doesn’t usually happen. I’ve never had this happen before in my 30 years of that…

In a widely speculated move, IU Athletics will begin beer sales to the general public inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall this year for men’s and women’s basketball. Zach Osterman of the Indianapolis Star was the first to report the news.  IU Athletics later confirmed the news in a release. Director of Athletics Scott Dolson hinted in late August the change was forthcoming. “I am a big proponent of making certain that we’re keeping up with what our fans would like to see from a fan experience standpoint,” Dolson said. IU introduced beer sales at football games in 2019, and have…

The one-and-done era of college basketball may be coming to an end. According to a report by Shams Charania of the Athletic, the NBA and the Player’s Association are “expected to agree on moving the age eligibility for the NBA Draft from 19 years old to 18” in a move that could go into effect as early as the 2024 NBA Draft. Last week, 247Sports released new class of 2024 player rankings, and Indiana had offered 15 of the top-50 players in the class.  No doubt many of…

If you find yourself pleased with Indiana’s 3-0 start but not quite sure how for real they are just yet, you are in good company. IU football has been much more hare than tortoise throughout much of its history, often bursting out of the gate in September before hitting the meat of its schedule. And the outside world believes that is the case with these 2022 Hoosiers, a team that while undefeated, has admittedly not been convincing, especially over the last two weeks against non-Power Five competition. The gauntlet begins on Saturday when the Hoosiers venture away from the friendly…

A week ago, IU football head coach Tom Allen said he wasn’t afraid to bench kicker Charles Campbell. The motivational tactic worked, as the redshirt senior from Jackson, Tenn. connected on four field goals Saturday, including the walk-off game winner against Western Kentucky. For his efforts, Campbell has been named the Big Ten’s Special Teams Player of the Week.  He was also tabbed the Lou Groza Award Star of the Week. The Academic All-Big Ten honoree earned the second league Special Teams Player of the Week honor of his career.  The first came after his performance at Rutgers in 2020. …

Can Indiana return to the Final Four for the first time in 21 years? Well known national college basketball analyst Jon Rothstein believes it isn’t out of the question. Rothstein named five dark horse candidates to reach the 2023 Final Four, and added to an offseason full of optimistic outlooks for IU when he included the Hoosiers as one of his picks. Why does he like Indiana this year?  It’s pretty simple — the Hoosiers have an experienced, deep and talented roster. “The Hoosiers may be viewed as the favorite in the Big Ten by default, but you can’t argue…

Although Cameron Knight came out for pregame warmups in a boot, there was no indication Caleb Murphy would see the field at center on Saturday against Western Kentucky. When he arrived at IU in 2020, there was no indication he’d ever play that position in college. Murphy was recruited as a defensive lineman, moved to tight end during his freshman season, might have moved back to the defense, and this spring head coach Tom Allen indicated the Campbellsburg, Ind. product had moved to the offensive line. It sounded like 2022 would be a developmental year for Murphy, as he got…
