Ding dong, Rutgers is dead. Okay, not really, but Indiana snapped a six-game losing streak to Rutgers on Tuesday evening in Bloomington and won their seventh game in eight tries in the process. The Hoosiers started fast, and jumped out to a 30-16 lead with 7:54 left in the first half. But the gritty Scarlet Knights responded. They cut the lead to 38-35 by halftime, and they were within one early in the second half. IU never relinquished the lead, and pulled back out to a 10-point edge, only to see Rutgers come as close as 59-56 with less than…

For the second time in as many years, Rutgers point guard Paul Mulcahy made a dirty play against Indiana in Bloomington. Immediately after what appeared to be a game clinching defensive rebound by Trayce Jackson-Davis on Tuesday evening, Mulcahy tripped the All-American as he attempted to advance the ball to the IU end of the court. It happened with 30.6 seconds remaining and Indiana leading 63-56. Mulcahy made no attempt to go for the basketball and instead attempted to subtly stick his foot out to trip Jackson-Davis. The maneuver caused Jackson-Davis’ shoe to come off. The incident immediately drew the…
Trayce Jackson-Davis isn’t IU’s all-time scoring leader. And he isn’t the program’s all-time rebounding leader. Not yet anyway on that latter category. But on Tuesday evening the 6-foot-9 senior forward became the first IU player ever to surpass both 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. Jackson-Davis passed legendary IU guard Yogi Ferrell on Tuesday evening in a win over Rutgers and now stands sixth all-time at IU with 2,004 points. He is third all-time in rebounds. The Greenwood, Ind. product seems to achieve a new milestone every game, and he’ll admit he’s aware of the accomplishments if not…

The college basketball world is well aware at this point — no one is going to slow down Purdue big man Zach Edey when the Boilermakers have the ball. Sure, there are ways to limit his impact. But as his 22.4 points per game and 63 percent conversion rate from the field illustrate, Edey is going to produce. And in large part due to Edey, Purdue has the most efficient offense in the country. So if you want to beat Purdue, you had better score on the other end. Indiana’s combination of Jalen Hood-Schifino and Trayce Jackson-Davis might just be…
A weekend sweep of Purdue served the IU men’s and women’s basketball teams well. The IU men moved up three spots to No. 18 after a 1-1 week that included a win over No. 1 Purdue on Saturday. It was IU’s eighth all-time win over the No. 1 ranked team. Indiana has been ranked in the top-25 for all but three weeks during this season. They started the 2022-23 campaign at No. 13. The AP voters apparently viewed the loss to Indiana as a high quality defeat for Purdue, as the Boilermakers remained in the No. 1 perch. That was…
The tall task of ending a long losing streak to Rutgers might have become a bit more manageable for Indiana. Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell said on a Sunday evening television appearance starting forward Mawot Mag will be “out for a bit” after suffering a leg injury on Saturday against Michigan State. Mag left that game and did not return. Mag is the second leading rebounder for a Scarlet Knights squad that dominated IU on the glass in December. He had seven points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes in that contest. Overall, Mag is averaging 7.8 points and 5.3…
Indiana had four recruiting prospects on hand for their marquee matchup against Purdue on Saturday afternoon. It would be difficult to imagine a better showcase for recruiting than the scene at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, both with the best crowd environment of the year, and a win over the No. 1 ranked team in the country. Here’s a quick update on the four high school players who were in attendance as guests of Indiana. Now fully transitioned into the role of recruiter, class of 2023 Indiana signee Gabe Cupps was in Bloomington once again. The 6-foot-2 point guard from Centerville,…
When Mason Gillis delivered a hard foul on Indiana’s Malik Reneau on Saturday afternoon, Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis rushed to confront the Purdue forward, chest to chest. Players from both teams immediately entered the scrum, and for a moment it seemed anything could happen as emotions began to boil over. It was just the latest reminder that this IU-Purdue rivalry runs at a different temperature — red hot. But things are a bit different off the court. There are friendships among the players, relationships developed during recruiting, a degree of mutual respect, and at times even camaraderie. Jackson-Davis is a player…
