Thursday was the first day that college basketball staffs could make direct contact with rising juniors. To be clear, Indiana and other staffs have been having conversations with players in the class of 2025 for a long time, but until Thursday those connections were facilitated by coaches and parents. College football is just two and a half months away, and well known analyst Phil Steele unveiled his 2023 preseason All-America and All-Big Ten teams this week. Indiana is represented with two players on the All-America squad and a total of five Hoosiers received All-Big Ten recognition. Steele named return specialist and running back Jaylin Lucas second team All-America and long-snapper Sean Wracher fourth-team. Steele also named Lucas and Wracher first-team All Big Ten. Class of 2024 5-star point guard Boogie Fland took an official visit to Indiana this week along with his family. Fland attends Stepinac H.S. in New York, and he plays on the Nike EYBL Circuit for the PSA Cardinals.  He is ranked No. 7 overall in the 2024 class according to the On3 Industry Average, and he’s the No. 1 point guard. Part of learning basketball at Indiana is learning how to recruit. Second through ninth grade students are at the Mike Woodson Basketball Camp this week in Bloomington, and they started serenading class of 2024 wing Tyler Betsey on Wednesday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. “We want Tyler,” the campers chanted, encouraged by Woodson, who said “I can’t hear you” as they did their part to pitch in on Betsey’s recruitment.  “They know their basketball here in the state of Indiana,” Woodson said approvingly of the kids. Despite not having a cash cow for a football program, IU Athletics seems to be doing okay. Better than okay, really.  At least in 2022. IU Athletics ranked 13th nationally among more than 230 public NCAA Division I schools in total revenue for 2022.  The department raked in a record $166.8 million of revenue according to a USA Today report released on Monday. Indiana fans can look for one-and-done star guard Jalen Hood-Schifino at the 2023 NBA Draft on June 22. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Mike Woodson there with him. Widely expected to be a first round draft choice, Hood-Schifino was invited to the NBA Draft green room, Jonathan Givony of ESPN reported on Tuesday. Former IU basketball big man Thomas Bryant became the eighth former Hoosier to win an NBA title as a player on Monday evening when the Denver Nuggets eliminated the Miami Heat in Game Five. Bryant was on the active roster for the Nuggets but did not make an appearance in the Playoffs.
