Indiana starting center Kel’el Ware is out vs. Wisconsin. The 7-foot Ware emerged from the Indiana bus at the Kohl Center wearing a walking boot, according to Seth Tow of The Daily Hoosier, who is in Madison.  Ware was not out with the rest of the team during the first round of pregame warmups. He finally emerged from the locker room still wearing the boot.  Ware has a sprained right ankle according to coach Mike Woodson. Ware was listed as questionable by Indiana on the team’s pregame availability report.  He did not suffer an obvious injury during IU’s most recent…

Indiana’s 2019 season was an outlier for sure. The Hoosiers attained an eight-win season and a winning record in the Big Ten — both for the first time since 1993, and a national ranking for the first time since 1994. During the offseason following that memorable 2019 campaign, IU strength coach David Ballou and athletic performance coach Matt Rhea left Bloomington for Tuscaloosa to join Nick Saban’s Alabama staff. By the end of the 2019 campaign, Ballou and Rhea had built national reputations as two of the best at what they were doing.  Losing Ballou, an IU alumnus, stung a…

When the two burger boys sat with two fouls, Purdue feasted on Indiana’s bench. IU was trailing Purdue just 9-7 when Mackenzie Mgbako picked up a second foul at the 15:30 mark of the first half.  He had scored all of Indiana’s seven points but checked out of the game and would not see the floor again for 12 minutes. The Hoosiers were still trailing just 12-9 when Mgbako’s fellow McDonald’s All-American Kel’el Ware was hit with a second foul with 13:40 remaining.  While he was struggling to limit Zach Edey’s post touches, Ware was having some success bothering Edey’s…

Heading into Friday’s game against Minnesota, Mackenzie Mgbako had made more threes than twos in five straight games. In a league as well scouted as the Big Ten, the book on guarding Mgbako seemed to be gaining clarity — run him off the arc. Mgbako produced his best scoring output of his freshman season with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor against the Golden Gophers.  Four of his six makes came in the paint, with three coming off the bounce after attacking close-outs. At 6-foot-8 and spending him most of his time at small forward, Mgbako…

Everything seems to go better at home. Indiana sandwiched a poor performance at Rutgers with a second straight solid home conference win on Friday evening in Bloomington. The starts of each half were the key against Minnesota. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 25-8 lead less than eight minutes into the game. After allowing the Gophers back within single-digits on multiple occasions, a 19-6 early second half run gave the Hoosiers a 60-39 edge and put the game out of reach. Let’s take a deeper look at how IU won 74-62 with another edition of The Report Card. Indiana (12-5,…
