Indiana is following a familiar November script. The Hoosiers defeated No. 10 seed Wake Forest 3-2 in two overtimes Sunday evening to advance to the round of 16 in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. IU fell behind twice, but twice had an answer for Demon Deacon goals. But there would be no Wake Forest equalizer after an Indiana goal in the first overtime. Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but a header by Indiana’s Hugo Bacharach in the 54th minute tied the match at one. 54′ | HUGO HEADS US LEVEL!@HBacharach | #IUMS pic.twitter.com/XQLaIvcgQJ — Indiana Men’s Soccer (@IndianaMSOC)…

Defending national champion head coach Dan Hurley had a few days to focus on Indiana, and he saw enough post touches by their big men through their first three games to know that’s where he had to focus his gameplan to stop the Hoosiers. What’s his read on what IU is all about right now? “Just paint, paint, paint for them,” Hurley said after a 77-57 win over the Hoosiers. Including IU’s 3-of-13 effort from long range on Sunday, Indiana is just 14-of-53 from deep on the season.  Closing out on the arc wasn’t a major concern for Hurley coming…

Teri Moren has been looking for improvement on the defensive end, and she got it on Sunday afternoon in Bloomington. Indiana held Lipscomb to 30.9 percent shooting and forced 16 turnovers in a dominant 77-44 win at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. “We were a little bit better tonight defensively from our group,” Moren said.  “The defensive goal, because I’ll probably be asked was to keep them under 60, so we were able to do that.” Moren particularly liked the defensive play of her second-year guard. “Lexus Bargesser was terrific on the defensive side of the ball. She was really locked.”…

UPDATE:  On his pregame radio appearance, IU coach Mike Woodson said Xavier Johnson will play vs. UConn. The original story follows. ——————————— Indiana fans held their breath as starting sixth-year point guard Xavier Johnson clutched his leg a few days ago.  It was a familiar scene after Johnson’s 2022-23 season ended abruptly 11 months earlier at Kansas. Johnson suffered a lower left leg injury in the final minutes of Indiana’s 89-80 win over Wright State on Thursday, and limped off the court. But it looks like Johnson has a good chance to play today. He is in uniform for pregame…

The Indiana player who some people were worried about coming into the season might be the only reason the Hoosiers are 3-0 instead of 0-3. Kel’el Ware has started his IU career averaging a double-double — 18.3 points and 10.0 rebounds — to go with 2.3 assists, 2.0 blocks, and just 1.0 turnover and 1.7 fouls in 33 minutes per game. Before the season Ware said he wanted to prove everybody wrong when it came to talk about his lack of a motor at Oregon a year ago. He and Indiana coach Mike Woodson had an understanding since he committed…

For the third straight game to open the season, Indiana defeated a mid-major team by a single digit margin. It looked like this might be the game where IU buried their opponent early.  They jumped on shorthanded Wright State 18-6 to start the game, and led by as much as 15 before halftime.  But the Raiders made six threes in the final ten minutes of the first half and got as close as 50-48 before the break.  After taking a five point lead into halftime, Indiana struggled to pull away in the second stanza.  Their biggest lead was 12 after…
