Indiana’s season ended in heartbreak in South Bend. With the College Cup on the line, the Hoosiers and Notre Dame couldn’t break a 1-1 tie in regulation or two overtimes. It’s going to be quite a ride in the coming weeks as new IU football coach Curt Cignetti rebuilds the IU roster and staff. As we’ve already seen with his assistant coaches, it would be reasonable to expect some influence from Cignetti’s No. 24 ranked 11-1 James Madison team. JMU starting quarterback Jordan McCloud plans to enter the transfer portal, and he’s certainly someone Cignetti could try to bring with him to Bloomington. Down a starter, Indiana flashed its best 32 minutes this season at a good time — at the start of the Big Ten season. BLOOMINGTON — In their 2023-24 Big Ten opener, Indiana defeated Maryland on Friday evening by a final score of 65-53 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Indiana led 40-28 at halftime and by as much as 23 in the second half.  The Hoosiers were led in the game Kel’el Ware with 18 points and 14 rebounds.  IU put four in double figures in a balanced offensive effort. Indiana starting point guard Xavier Johnson will not play against Maryland in Friday’s Big Ten opener for both teams. The sixth-year point guard emerged from the IU locker room in street clothes and a boot on his left foot. Johnson suffered an injury during Indiana’s win over Harvard on Sunday during the first half and did not return. In six games this season, Johnson is averaging 10.5 points, 2.3 assists and 2.2 rebounds over 24.5 minutes per contest. Johnson missed most of the 2022-23 season after breaking his right foot. New IU football coach Curt Cignetti is on the ground in Bloomington and things are moving quickly. According to a report by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Indiana is expected to hire several key components Cignetti’s James Madison staff. That includes offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan, defensive coordinator Bryant Haines, and quarterbacks coach Tino Sunseri. Quarterbacks have flourished at JMU under the trio of Cignetti, Shanahan and Sunseri over the last three years, combining for 10,816 yards, 119 TDs, 18 INTs. Indiana University Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Dolson has named Curt Cignetti the 30th head football coach in program history. Cignetti posted an 11-1 record in 2023, his fifth season as James Madison head coach. He had an overall mark of 52-9 (.853), including a 19-4 run over 2022 and 2023, JMU’s first two years as an FBS program. With basketball fully underway at all levels, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo updated their 2024 NBA mock draft. In 2023 Indiana placed two players in the draft, and the ESPN duo believes the Hoosiers will see another player chosen next June. IU big man Kel’el Ware is off to a strong start for coach Mike Woodson, averaging 17.7 points and 8.8 rebounds while shooting 63.9 percent from the field and showing off a diverse skill set. Indiana saw two of its starters contend with injuries during a win over Harvard on Sunday in Indianapolis. One is still carrying a questionable tag the day before IU’s Big Ten opener against Maryland. Sophomore forward Malik Reneau left the Harvard game briefly with what appeared to be a lower back issue.  He returned to the floor, however, and did not appear to be significantly limited.
