Center Jalen Washington of Gary West Side Leadership Academy announced on Twitter on Friday that he has committed to North Carolina. Washington, the No. 21 player nationally in the Class of 2022 according to 247Sports.com’s composite rankings and the top player in the state of Indiana in the class, had offers from Indiana and Purdue among others. However, North Carolina strongly indicated that Washington was a priority two weeks ago when it sent its entire coaching staff, including head coach Hubert Davis, to see Washington at the IBCA/IHSAA Charles Hughes Memorial Tournament in Carmel. Washington averaged 12.7 points per game…

Aaron Steinfeldt has in no way resigned himself to the idea that he has played his last basketball or baseball game. The Indiana freshman tight end knows he’s not going to be the same three-sport star at IU as he was at Bloomington North High School. However, when the opportunity arises for him to go attack a hoop or pick up a bat again, even on a limited pick-up basis, he plans to take it. And he’s got a new sport too. “I try my best to play,” Steinfeldt said Thursday on a Zoom press conference with Indiana beat writers.…

Omar Cooper Jr. and his family were struck by just how similar the recruiting pitches for Indiana and West Virginia were. Neal Brown at West Virginia and Tom Allen at Indiana both emphasized development, and how they would spend time working on Cooper the player and the person. They both considered Cooper a versatile receiver and one they could do a lot with, and the Coopers liked the atmosphere in both Morgantown and Bloomington. Both Allen and Brown put in time personally to work on recruiting Cooper and made clear to him that he was wanted. “It was oddly very…

Gabe Cupps was one of the names that was passed on from the Archie Miller coaching administration at Indiana to the Mike Woodson administration. He’d caught the eye of staff members who stayed on, including recruiting coordinator Brian Walsh, and they passed him on to the new staff members as someone to follow. They had some reason to be skeptical, considering Cupps is listed at 6-foot-2, 165 pounds but played this season at around 145. But after finally getting to watch the point guard from Centerville (Ohio) High School in person in June, the Hoosiers saw a floor leader who…

Indiana cornerback Tiawan Mullen was named a second-team preseason All-American by the Sporting News, which released its preseason 2021 College Football All-America team on Tuesday.  Mullen was named a first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America in 2020, becoming the first Indiana cornerback in history to be named a first-team All-American by any recognized organization and just the second Indiana cornerback to be named to any All-American team. Mullen was named first-team All-Big Ten by the media and second-team by the coaches, recording 38 tackles including 4.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks. He also had three interceptions and…

James Monds III believes his best attribute as a cornerback is his ability to get his hands on the ball. As a junior he broke up nine passes and managed an interception and he would have had more if anyone threw his way. So he considered Indiana, which led the Big Ten in interceptions in 2020 with 17, to be a natural fit. That’s a big reason why the three-star recruit from Vero Beach, Fla., committed to Indiana on Sunday over offers from Nebraska, Wisconsin, Mississippi State, Michigan State and Miami (Fla). “I think it fits great because I consider…

As much emphasis as has been put on the four-out part of Mike Woodson’s four-out, one-in NBA style offense, the one-in is still an important piece of the whole. Woodson wants his big men to be skilled, but he also wants them to be big and tough enough to get the defensive rebounds necessary to get the break started. Austin Parks, the center in the Class of 2023 to whom Indiana extended a scholarship offer this week, is that type of player. He still has two years of high school left at St. Mary Memorial High School in St. Mary’s,…

Jalen Hood-Schifino might not fill an obvious need spot in Indiana’s roster in the Class of 2022. Heading into the 2021-22 season, they already have four years of eligibility each for point guard Khristian Lander and shooting guards Tamar Bates, Anthony Leal and Trey Galloway. That’s to say nothing of the two years each that point guards Xavier Johnson and Rob Phinisee have remaining and the two years shooting guard Parker Stewart still has left having played two seasons and sat out two others. But the Hoosiers are hotly pursuing Hood-Schifino, the 6-foot-5, 210-pound guard from Monteverde Academy in Florida…
