4-star and national top-15 class of 2024 QB Tyler Cherry commits to IU football

Indiana completed its quarterback room for the 2024 season with a bang.

Greenwood, Ind. senior QB Tyler Cherry announced on Tuesday evening he has committed to IU.

“Committed!!!  Go Hoosiers!” Cherry wrote on his social media posts.

The 6-foot-5 Cherry decommitted from Duke last week and chose Indiana over Michigan State.

Cherry told The Daily Hoosier he is impressed with new head coach Curt Cignetti and his staff.

“Coach Cignetti has a great overall vision for the program,” Cherry told TDH. “He believes that this program can win and win quickly, and he has no doubt.

“Coach Tino (QB coach Sunseri) and Coach Shanahan (OC Mike) run a great offense and the staff has an amazing track record of QBs that they have each worked with.”

According to the On3 Industry Average, Cherry is a 4-star recruit and the No. 15 ranked quarterback nationally in the 2024 class.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Cherry is the second-highest rated quarterback Indiana has landed during the rankings era.  He trails only Donaven McCulley, who later converted to wide receiver and is now a player Cherry could end up throwing to in 2024.

After backing up current IU quarterback Tayven Jackson for two years at Center Grove H.S., Cherry led the Trojans to a 23-4 record over the last two seasons, with a Class 6A state title and state semifinals appearance.

Cherry set Center Grove records for passing yards with 5,461, passing touchdowns with 56, overall completions with 364 and completion percentage at 68.5.  As a senior he completed 71.5 percent of his throws for 3,156 yards and 34 touchdowns with six interceptions.

Indiana now has five scholarship quarterbacks slated to join the team in 2024 — Sixth-year senior Ohio transfer Kurtis Rourke, redshirt sophomore Tayven Jackson, redshirt freshman Broc Lowry, and true freshmen Cherry and Alberto Mendoza.
