2024 Olympics: IU swimmer Anna Peplowski earns silver, King completes final individual swim

IU swimmer Anna Peplowski is the third Hoosier to earn an Olympic medal in Paris, and the first female athlete.

The rising Indiana senior helped the United States women’s 4×200-meter freestyle team to a silver medal on Thursday afternoon.

Peplowski did not swim in the final but she’ll get a silver medal, as is customary for all swimmers on a relay team who participate in the preliminaries or finals.

The Illinois native clocked the second-fastest time earlier Thursday in the prelims to help position the U.S. in the finals.

Named IU’s female athlete of the year for 2023-24, the freestyle specialist is now a school record holder in six short course events following her junior season in which she medaled in two events and totaled seven All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. Peplowski highlighted her NCAA program with a silver medal in the 200-yard freestyle and bronze in the 500 free.

Peplowski led the IU women to their first Big Ten Championship since 2019, finishing runner-up or better in six events – including four individual or relay conference titles. The junior led off IU’s dramatic 400-yard freestyle relay result that clinched the Big Ten team title by one-half of a point.

Meanwhile, legendary IU swimmer Lilly King finished eighth in the 200-meter breaststroke final on Thursday, her final individual swim in the Olympic Games.  She’s still expected swim in a medley relay on Saturday.  King announced last month the Paris Games would be her last.  She finished fourth in the 100-meter breaststroke final earlier this week.

Previously in Paris, former IU swimmer Blake Pieroni and incoming IU transfer swimmer Matt King each earned medals in relay events.
