2023 guard Jakai Newton off to a strong start: Notes and highlights

Playing on one of, if not the best team in Georgia, Jakai Newton and the Newton Rams are off to a 4-0 start to the 2021-22 campaign.  They are ranked No. 1 in the state’s class 7A.

Here are a few quick notes on Newton from his first few contests.

Relentless Hoops’ Trent Markwith wrote this about Newton’s performance over the weekend:

“Jakai Newton is a pure scorer who’s always in attack mode,” Markwith wrote.  “The Indiana commit finished with 17 points & 5 rebounds but his 17 points were all loud buckets that got the crowd on their feet. Newton’s ability to breakdown defenders off the dribble and hit contested shots is what separates him from other scorers. Jakai has the ball on a string and able to make quick moves in tight spaces to get his shot off. Newton’s athleticism and ability to play off two feet allows him to finish through contact in the paint as well.”

On the Radar Hoops’ Jonathan Hemingway had this to say last week:

“Newton, an Indiana commit, is at the heart of what makes this team special,” Hemingway wrote.  “In many ways he is the fuel that makes this engine burn so hotly. He finished with 19 points in the win over Norcross. He is a high energy scorer that attacks the basket with intensity. He is a superb athlete who can also split time as a playmaker at the top of the key in coach Charlemagne Gibbon’s offense.”

RYZE Hoops Symone Stanley caught up with Newton to ask a few questions about his game and decision to commit to Indiana.

Finally, here are some lengthy highlights of Newton’s team in action over the weekend against No. 2 Westlake.  The Newton Rams have several Division One players on their roster, including a UConn commit and a Georgia commit.

Jakai Newton is No. 0 in white.
