“Yup, he won:” Google confirms what Curt Cignetti promised two years ago

    He backed it up.

And because he did, “It’s pretty simple, I win, Google me” will go down as one of the greatest sports lines of all time.

And now when you Google IU football coach Curt Cignetti’s name, the $4 trillion market cap global technology conglomerate confirms his iconic message.

If you go to the search engine today and enter Curt Cignetti, the first response at the top of the page is “Yep, he won.”

It’s a worthy response by Google, since Cignetti, perhaps unwittingly, became a great ambassador for their brand.

Frustrated because you can’t find the answer to your question?  Just Google it.

That’s how this whole thing started.

Why do you think you can win at Indiana when no one has before?  Why do you think you can win with a bunch of small conference transfers?

Cignetti was already frustrated because he felt his confidence far exceeded what he saw in and around Bloomington when he arrived in late 2023.

And then those same questions were asked over and over.  Eventually Cignetti had enough.

At an IU basketball game on Dec. 1, 2023, Cignetti delivered his first memorable line to the crowd:  “Purdue sucks, but so does Michigan and Ohio State.  Go IU.”

And then at a national signing day press conference a couple weeks later, Cignetti sent his doubters to Google.

“We had pretty much won championships year in and year out, and doom and gloom on the Indiana side, and that’s kind of why I got out there a little bit the way I did,” Cignetti said at a press conference ahead of the national championship game.

“I knew I was out on a limb. I had to find out if the fan base was dead or on life support. The basketball game was the first thing, and then Google me was our press conference, signing day press conference, when I was asked the same question for about the 14th time. I had a lot of confidence in myself and the staff because we had had success. That’s why I took the job.”

Cignetti delivered.  He’s 27-2 in two seasons at a program that had the most losses in college football history before he arrived.

He has authored Indiana’s first national championship, first outright Big Ten title since 1945, and the first 16-0 season in major college football since the 1890s.

Even the most casual sports fan is aware of Cignetti and his iconic “Google me I win” line.  T-shirts and bobbleheads have been made repeating the phrase.  It’s everywhere.

And now, after Cignetti led Indiana to one of the greatest turnarounds in the history of sports, it is confirmed by Google.

    It’s pretty simple.

    Yup, he won.
