Wichita State transfer Dexter Dennis to take official visit at Indiana next week

Wichita State transfer guard Dexter Dennis will take an official visit to IU next week he confirmed with The Daily Hoosier.

The visit will take place April 18-19.

Here is what we wrote about Dennis in our names to know feature when IU first made contact.  Further below are his 2021-22 highlights.

Mike Woodson is building his program on a foundation of defense, and there are few better on that end than Wichita State transfer guard Dexter Dennis.

The 6-foot-5, 210 pound Dennis entered the NCAA transfer portal Wednesday.  He started in 27 of Wichita State’s 28 games and finished second on the team in minutes per game with 31.1. He averaged 8.4 points and five rebounds per game on 35.3% shooting from the field.

Dennis is an athletic wing who can play anywhere from the two to a stretch-four.  He is a highlight reel dunker with good handles, and Dennis has had his moments as a prolific three-point shooter — even one game IU fans may remember.

One of the nation’s best defenders, Dennis can guard a variety of scorers at the 1-through-4 positions.  His defensive prowess is aided by his 6-9 wingspan.

Dennis came to WSU as a recruit from Baker, La.  A four year contributor who has played in 112 games while starting 94, he won the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022.

For his career, Dennis is sixth in 3-pointers made (176) all-time at Wichita State, but the big question is whether he can regain his shooting touch from beyond the arc.  He made 40 percent of his threes on 135 attempts as a true freshman, but his conversion rate has declined each season since, from 33.6 percent as a sophomore and junior, to 29.7 percent as a senior.

One of Dennis’ more impressive games came during his 2018-19 true freshman season when he made 5-of-7 3-pointers and added six rebounds and four blocks as part of a 73-63 WSU win over Indiana in Bloomington in the 2019 NIT Tournament quarterfinals.

Dennis has one year of eligibility remaining.

Coming out of high school, Dennis had high major offers including Ole Miss, Xavier, Georgia Tech, Georgia and Kansas State.
