ESPN college football writer Pete Thamel reported encouraging updates Tuesday regarding IU football quarterback Kurtis Rourke.

In an early morning post on X, Thamel reported via sources new insight on Rourke’s timeline for a potential return.

“Indiana QB Kurtis Rourke’s injured thumb is improving enough where he could be back for Michigan State on Nov. 2,” Thamel posted on his X page.  “He’s still doubtful for Saturday against Washington, but there’s more optimism about the immediate future.”

Later Tuesday morning, Thamel clarified Rourke had surgery on Monday, and restated he might only miss one game.

“IU QB Kurtis Rourke underwent surgery on his injured right thumb on Monday, per ESPN sources,” Thamel wrote.  “That helped provide some clarity on a potential return, including optimism that he could be back for Indiana’s game at Michigan State on Nov. 2.”

The timing update is encouraging after initial reports provided a more ominous and uncertain outlook.

Rourke’s hand hit the arm of a Nebraska defender as he followed through on a late first half pass Saturday.  Blood could be seen dripping from Rourke’s thumb during the game.  He played through the injury for the remainder of the half but emerged after the break in street clothes.  IU coach Curt Cignetti said after the game Rourke’s thumb nail was injured, but he may not have had the benefit of a complete evaluation at that point.

Rourke has led Indiana to their first 7-0 start since 1967.  The No. 13 Hoosiers are a contender for both the Big Ten Championship Game and the College Football Playoff.

A product of Canada, Rourke has completed 135 of 181 passes for 1,941 yards this year. He has 15 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Indiana faces Washington at Noon ET Saturday on BTN with ESPN’s College Gameday on campus. Redshirt sophomore Tayven Jackson is expected to start at quarterback.  In the second half vs. Nebraska, Jackson was 7 of 8 for 91 yards with two scores. He also ran twice for 21 yards.
