Indiana women’s basketball has a winning streak for the first time since December.
The Hoosiers held on to defeat Wisconsin 77-74 at Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. on Wednesday.
IU (13-11, 2-10 Big Ten) led for nearly 33 minutes of game time, but struggled to put the game out of reach for the Badgers. Wisconsin (13-10, 5-7) trailed by 12 points in the third quarter, but came back to take the lead with 3:33 remaining in the game.
But Indiana star Shay Ciezki took over from there. The senior was at her best when her team needed it most, scoring 10 points in the final three minutes to get the Hoosiers over the line.
Ciezki added another chapter to her stellar season with her seventh 30-point performance, and her third in the last four games. The former Penn State transfer shot 12 for 19 from the field and 3 for 5 from 3-point range for 31 points, and the 5-foot-7 guard grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Ciezki played all 40 minutes for the seventh game this year.
Freshman guard Nevaeh Caffey gave Indiana a nice spark as well. She scored a career-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting, with eight points and both threes coming in the first quarter.
The Hoosiers, as a team, made progress in the turnover department on Wednesday. They have struggled all season with careless turnovers, and the issue has gotten worse during conference play. IU looked like it was headed towards a familiar path when it committed 10 turnovers in the first half. But Teri Moren’s team took much better care of the ball in the second half, with only two giveaways — an improvement that made a big difference in the result.
IU returns home on Sunday for a rematch against Purdue, with tipoff set for 2 p.m. ET.
