Report: Quarterback Peyton Ramsey is in the Transfer Portal

Indiana won’t enjoy the luxury of having an experienced backup at quarterback in 2020.

247Sports national writer Chris Hummer is reporting that quarterback Peyton Ramsey is in the transfer portal.

Ramsey will complete his degree and will be eligible to play immediately as a graduate transfer.  Although he has entered his name in the portal, Ramsey remains eligible to return to Indiana.

According to a source, Ramsey met with head coach Tom Allen on Friday and the final decision to transfer was reached during that meeting.

Ramsey is Indiana’s all-time completion percentage leader.  For his career the Ohio native has completed 66.5 percent of his passes.

After a highly competitive battle for the starting job during IU’s 2019 fall camp, Ramsey became the backup to Michael Penix, Jr.

Penix suffered several injuries over the course of the 2019 season, and he eventually had season ending surgery.

In his place, Ramsey had his best season at Indiana.

Ramsey was 204-of-300 throwing the football for 2,454 yards and 13 touchdowns along with 5 interceptions.  He also carried the ball for 252 yards and 7 more touchdowns.

The 6-foot-2 Ramsey had several memorable games during the season, including a 351 yard passing day at Nebraska as IU became bowl eligible, and he produced five total touchdowns as the Hoosiers reclaimed the Old Oaken Bucket against Purdue in West Lafayette.

Ramsey was lauded throughout the season for remaining loyal to his team rather than transferring after he lost the starting job.  However, with the expectation being that Penix will regain his starting role in 2020, a transfer by Ramsey for his final year of eligibility became widely expected.

Redshirt sophomore Jack Tuttle, a former 4-star recruit with very limited experience, is expected to be the backup to Penix unless Ramsey returns.
